TikToker Rae Christine, best known as the Green Dress Girl, online, took to the video-sharing platform to address the widespread backlash she had recently garnered. Rae shared a public statement after she went viral for questioning women about what they were to dance clubs. She has since become a meme online.
On July 15, 2024, Rae Christine took to her @raechristine_ TikTok account to showcase her clubbing outfit, which included a bright lime green strapless dress alongside a pair of white heels. She then questioned women why they were wearing “flats and sandals” to the venue. Most of her video was filmed in the back of a cab, except for the ending, which showed a selfie of her outfit. Christine, best known as Green Dress Girl online, said in her video,
“I don’t know what’s happening to club culture but the girlies are not wearing heels in the clubs anymore. Do we need to come out of retirement and teach the girls how to wear heels, or like what heels to shop for when going to the club? Part of the thrill of going to the club is dancing on the couch in your heels.”
The video of the 34-year-old was quick to go viral and had been viewed over 17 million times on TikTok. It had also amassed over one million likes.
However, she amassed soaring backlash online, as reported by several news publications, including Complex, Distractify, and more. The Green Dress Girl has since taken to her account to address the same.
“I was just having a little jokey-joke with my friend”: The Green Dress Girl takes to TikTok to address backlash
On July 21, 2024, The Green Dress Girl took to the video-sharing platform to express that she did not expect her video to go viral. She stated, “Clearly, I didn’t think this was gonna go as far as it has.” She then explained that she was joking while creating the video and had “dry humor.”
Rae Christine also explained in the video that she does not go clubbing anymore, but she was confused about the “shift in culture.” She also stated,
“Club culture was business casual. We took the business of clubbing very seriously. Honestly, I was just having a little jokey-joke with my friend and decided to pull my phone out and recorded it, and I didn’t really think much of it.”
Christine also explained that she did not intend to look judgmental on the video and that she took the harsh criticism in a lighthearted manner. She also revealed that she would create a video of herself responding to the funny comments that were made in her initial video.
While explaining herself in the TikTok video, the Green Dress Girl also revealed that she created the video at 7:30 AM after getting breakfast with Kevin Hart’s tour manager. She revealed,
“Half of my eyelashes [were] hanging off. I know I did not look good.”
She then ended her video by encouraging clubgoers to wear whatever they wanted to wear.
