As per NBC 4 New York, Luigi Mangione, a person of interest in relation to UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson's murder, is currently in police custody for questioning. Authorities said on Monday, December 9, that police have arrested a man named Luigi Mangione for a gun charge after he was picked up while eating at a McDonalds in Altoona, Pennsylvania.
An employee from the food chain reportedly recognized and called the cops on him, said NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch at a press conference on Monday, adding:
"Responding officers questioned the suspect, who was acting suspiciously and was carrying multiple fraudulent IDs as well as a US passport."
Tisch further said that authorities recovered a firearm and suppressor that is consistent with the alleged weapon used during the "brazen targeted attack" on Thompson. There reportedly was also clothing and a mask similar to the one the killer had worn during the shooting found in Mangione's possession.
According to New York Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny, Luigi Mangione is a 26-year-old born and raised in Maryland. His last previous address was allegedly in Honolulu, Hawaii, and he reportedly had no prior arrests in New York.
Investigators believe that having Mangione in custody is central to resolving the UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson's high-profile murder. He was shot dead from behind on December 4 outside the Hilton Hotel in midtown Manhattan where he was staying.1
Everything to know about UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson's suspected killer, Luigi Mangione, and his arrest
Officers shared what little details they found about the UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson's suspected killer, who is now in police custody, on Monday. Luigi Mangione was reportedly a valedictorian when he graduated from the all-boys Gilman School in Baltimore in 2016.
A spokesman further mentioned, per NBC New York on December 9, that he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania in May 2020. He reportedly earned his master's in engineering, focusing on computer science and mathematics.
CBS News also reported on December 9 that Luigi Mangione comes from a prominent family in Maryland. He is reportedly Maryland Republican Delegate Nino Mangione's cousin.
Besides fake IDs and a "ghost gun," authorities reportedly found a document railing against the healthcare industry when they arrested him. Kenny further said about the document and Mangione:
"We don't think there is any specific threats to other people mentioned in that document, but it does seem that he has some ill-will towards corporate America."
Per CNN, two quotes were found in the hand-written document, including, "I do apologize for any strife and trauma, but it had to be done," and "These parasites had it coming."
As for his arrest, Kenny mentioned on Monday that the police didn't have Luigi Mangione's name before the police arrested him. He's currently on hold for gun charges but is yet to be charged for UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson's murder. Mangione is set to be extradited to New York, where he's going to be slapped with charges in connection with Thompson's killing.
