Colorado officer, Randy Roedema, has been convicted in the homicide of Elijah McClain, whom he pinned down, and injected with ketamine leading to his death. The incident occurred in 2019 and Elijah was 23 years old at the time. Roedema has been found guilty of criminally negligent homicide and third-degree assault. He is currently facing imprisonment and fines as well.

The conviction came on Thursday, October 12, 2023, regarding the incident that involved two police officers restraining a Black man, Elijah McClain. While Randy Roedema was found guilty, the other officer identified as Jason Rosenblatt has been acquitted of all the charges. The jury reportedly deliberated for about 16 hours over three days to reach the verdict, as reported by CNN.

In 2019, a Black pedestrian, Elijah McClain, was reportedly pinned on the ground by two cops, Randy Roedema and Jason Rosenblatt. Finally, a guilty verdict for Roedema arrived on Thursday, October 12, 2023, however, Rosenblatt was acquitted of all charges including assault. Both the officers were initially charged with manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, and assault.

Rosenblatt was seen hugging his attorneys after the verdict came, and he was acquitted of the charges.

Roedema's sentencing hearing has been scheduled for January 5, 2024. Sheneen McClain, the victim's mother, however, was not completely happy with the verdict and stated that justice wasn't served. She said that Randy Roedema was not acting alone, and the other officer was responsible for the death of her son.

Sheneen told KUSA,

"This is not a victory for me at all. This is not a victory for the human race. This is not justice. They have an eternal judgment that they have yet to see. And no matter how they try to clean up their slate, they still have my son’s blood on their hands."

All the other officers allegedly involved, apart from Roedema and Rosenblatt, will be tried later

During the closing arguments, prosecutors argued that Randy Roedema and Rosenblatt applied unnecessary force on an unarmed man. Prosecutor Duane Lyons further said that despite being trained professionals, the officers allegedly failed to diffuse the situation.

According to Colorado Attorney General, Phil Weiser, the verdict can heal the community in Aurora, after the tragic incident that took place in 2019.

Weiser added,

"Everyone in Colorado, everyone in the United States, no matter who you are, is accountable under the law. Hopefully, today’s verdict can be a sign for healing for the Aurora community and for our state."

Weiser said that to honor the victim, the communication between the community and law enforcement has to be improved. Initially, an autopsy report stated that the victim's death was "undetermined", and didn't rule it a homicide. Apart from Roedema and Rosenblatt, other officers including two paramedics were also charged in connection to Elijah's death.

The other cop, Nathan Woodyard, and the paramedics, Jeremy Cooper and Peter Cichuniec have pleaded not guilty to the charges filed against them. They will be tried in two separate cases by the end of this year.
