Robert Card, a 40-year-old trained firearms instructor who police believe is in the Army Reserve out of Saco, was identified as a person of interest in multiple mass shootings that occurred on Wednesday, October 25, 2023, in Lewiston, Maine. Per multiple reports, at least 22 were killed and scores more injured in two shootings at Sparetime Recreation and Schemengees Bar & Grille.
In a press conference, Michael Sauschuck, commissioner of the state Department of Public Safety, said that on Wednesday night around 7:15 pm, police descended on Sparetime Recreation on Mollison Way, responding to reports of an active shooter at the scene. Shortly after, police officers received reports of another shooting at Schemengees Bar & Grille on Lincoln Street.
Kathy Lebel, co-owner of Schemengees, told the Sun Journal that she was told the suspect, Robert Card, walked into the restaurant and “started shooting” at patrons playing cornhole.
Lebel told the outlet:
“It was just a fun night playing cornhole … it’s the last thing you’re expecting, right? I still feel like this whole thing is a nightmare.”
The Sun Journal reported at least 16 gunshot victims at Schemengees. Meanwhile, Sauschuck declined to confirm the actual number of victims but noted that the death toll will likely rise.
In a Facebook Post, Lewiston police identified Robert Card as the suspect in the mass shooting, adding that the assailant was ‘armed and dangerous.' Police also released a photo of Card’s vehicle, a white Subaru Outback, which was reportedly found abandoned near the Lisbon boat dock on Frost Hill Avenue near Route 196.
Robert Card served in the military for 20 years before retiring earlier this year
A manhunt is underway for a suspect responsible for a mass shooting at Lewiston, Maine, on Wednesday night that left 22 dead and several injured. In a Facebook post, police who identified Robert Card as the suspect said that he should be considered armed and dangerous before requesting that anyone with information regarding his whereabouts call 911.
Robert Card, from Boutin, Maine, is a trained firearms instructor believed to be in the Army Reserve stationed out of Saco, Maine. According to law enforcement, Card recently reported mental health issues, including hearing voices. Card, who reportedly threatened to shoot up the National Guard Base in Saco, ME, was committed to a mental health facility for two weeks during the summer of 2023.
The gunman, who opened fire at a restaurant and bowling alley, listed bowling as an interest on Facebook, which also included hunting, fishing, and golf. While the page has since been deleted, people on X (formerly known as Twitter) shared screenshots of his account.
One screenshot included a comment exchange that indicated Card may have served in the U.S. Army for 20 years before retiring earlier this year. A friend who referred to the gunman as “Sergeant Rob” also asked:
“Anyone left from the original 947th/439th? We will have to catch up sometime for a beer, it’s been about 11 years.”
Card wrote 20 weeks ago to a friend:
“Another wild bus trip thinks we’re too old, aren’t we? Good to hear from you just about to finish up my 20 years in the army. I just need them to approve my packet,”
Maine Gunman Robert Card is not a s*x offender
Multiple social media accounts and a few reports suggested that Card was a registered s*x offender. However, the reports circulating on social media are false. The person listed in the Maine registry is not the gunman. The man listed on the s*x offender registry is Robert W. Card, who was born a year after the gunman.
A woman claimed on a law enforcement post that Card was recently fired from a Lisbon, Maine, recycling plant. However, we cannot confirm the statement.
At the time of writing this article, police have yet to arrest the suspect, who identified himself as single on his Facebook account. An unverified report suggested that Card was twice divorced with a history of domestic violence. However, there is no confirmation of the allegations.
