Who is Yovngchimi? Real name, age, and all about the Puerto Rican rapper in wake of his recent arrest

Puerto Rican rap and urban music artist Yovngchimi was arrested by the country’s FBI special agents on December 29 at the Luis Munoz Marin International Airport in Carolina, Puerto Rico, on charges of firearm violations. He was indicted by a grand jury on December 12 and taken into custody on Sunday night.

The artist, whose real name is Ángel Javier Avilés Monzón, is now reportedly facing two federal felony charges for possession of weapons modified to fire automatically, as per the Puerto Rican Department of Justice’s statement to the press.

As per the indictment, 28-year-old Yovngchimi (born in February 1996) allegedly possessed a machinegun (of unknown make and model) modified to automatically fire more than one shot without the need for manual reload, and using a single trigger pull between June 2023 and August 2024. If convicted, the musician is looking up to a sentence of 10 years in federal prison on each count.


Exploring the life and career of Yovngchimi

Yovngchimi is a Puerto Rican rapper who was born and raised in San Juan. He is known for Latin trap, rap, urbano, and drill music and rose to fame with his 2021 debut single, Glizzy Walk, and its sequels, ATL and Glizzy Walk 2.0. His overnight success caught the attention of rapper Myke Towers who invited him to collaborate on his projects.

Over the years, he has also worked with the big names from the Puerto Rican rap scene including the likes of Luar La L, Nengo Flow, Anuel AA, Yeruza, J Balvin, and Ozuna. In 2022, he furthered his career with the release of the singles, Baby Father and Glizzy Walk 2.5, featuring Eladio Carrion. Hydro also appeared on both tracks.

The following year, Chimi, as he is alternatively called, dropped the mixtape Gangsta Grillz: Mvrda Gvng hosted by DJ Drama, the famous collaboration with Bad Bunny titled, Mercedes Carota, and a full-length debut album called WLGS featuring Ozuna, French Montana, Tay Keith, and Lunay.

Yovngchimi, who attended college in California, before returning home to pursue a career in music, is also active on Instagram where he has over 1.8 million followers. He also has a popular self-titled YouTube channel with 914,000 subscribers where the remix of Glizzy Walk 2.5 earned over 3 million views. Chimi has 7.7M monthly listeners on Spotify.


Amid Chimi’s latest legal trouble, he is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney (AUSA) Alberto López-Rocafort, Chief of the Gang Section, and AUSA Joseph Russell.

Meanwhile, the head of the federal prosecutor’s office and U.S. Attorney William Stephen Muldrow of the District of Puerto Rico announced the rapper’s arrest alongside FBI’s San Juan Field Office’s Special Agent in Charge Joseph Gonzales.

A federal district court judge will be overseeing the case and base Chimi’s sentence on the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors. The artist is currently awaiting trial.

Notably, Yovngchimi has faced legal troubles before such as in 2023 when he had to cancel a sold-out tour as his conditional release hindered him from leaving Puerto Rico.
