On September 19, 2024, an exclusive live-stream interview titled Unite for America was hosted by Oprah Winfrey, featuring Kamala Harris, Julia Roberts, and other celebrities. The interview followed Oprah's classic talk show format, including audience questions and testimonials. Although celebrities like Meryl Streep, Chris Rock, and Jennifer Lopez participated, Julia Roberts' comment on how the world views America gained the most attention online.
In the interview, Julia Roberts, who joined remotely, talked about being the mother of two first-time voters.
“I get to travel internationally a lot, and I want people to say oh, ‘you’re American!’ and not, ‘Oh, how’s it going over there.’ You know? I want to get back to that,” Julia said.
Julia's comment garnered a mixed response from the internet, wherein naysayers and supporters of the actress took to X to express their views.
"Hollywood has no connection to reality in daily American lives," one Internet user remarked.
"Yes, it's super important that our celebrities are happy when traveling overseas" an X user mentioned sarcastically.
"Just wondering how informed these actors are" another X user commented by attaching statistics about robbery, assault, and violent crime under Kamala Harris.
On the other hand, some internet users also agreed with Julia's comment:
"She is so right. This happened to me while I was in Iceland. It was a moment of substantial pause for me as an American." an internet user mentioned.
"Been to 9 countries in the last year, and Julia Robert is right on this. The world is watching, and the world are terrified we won’t make the right choice. #WeAreNotGoingBack" another internet user stated.
"Hopefully, we end this American nightmare come November, when we show Trump the door." an X user tweeted.
Chris Rock and Meryl Streep showcased support for Harris in addition to Julia Roberts
Apart from Julia's presence and support toward Kamala Harris at the recent rally in Oprah Winfrey's presence, actors Meryl Streep and Chris Rock also had something positive to say about the vice president.
While Meryl Streep greeted Harris with a "Hello, President Harris" and proceeded to cover her mouth in jest, Chris Rock mentioned that he wanted to bring his daughters to the White House and make them meet the Black woman president.
Additionally, Rock stated that Harris would make a great president and that he's ready to turn the page in order to stop "all the hate and negativity".
Julia Roberts' brother Eric Roberts issues apology for making misguided comments on her career
Eric Roberts recently released his memoir Runaway Train: Or, the Story of My Life So Far wherein he addressed his broken relationship with his sister Julia Roberts. Additionally, Eric also issued a public apology to Julia via his memoir, given he commented on Vanity Fair in 2018 stating:
“If it wasn’t for me, there would be no Julia Roberts and no Emma Roberts as celebrities, as actresses, and I’m very proud of that."
He also told the publication that when Julia first came to New York, he went into William Morris and questioned who was going to sign his sister. At the time Eric said he was proud that everyone knew he was first and that he "was first by a long shot". Futher he also compared his achievements to Julia Roberts by stating he was the first to get Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations.
Addressing these comments in his memoir, Eric has mentioned:
"Now one of the things I’d like to apologize for in this book is for publicly saying on more than one occasion, 'If it wasn’t for me, there would be no Julia Roberts'. That’s not only unfortunate, but it’s also untrue. And I hope Julie will accept this more public apology. It was an asinine thing to have said. I was proud of her, but it was pride turned on its head, to my own advantage."
However, Julia hasn't commented on Eric's apology or memoir yet.
In addition to talking about how others perceive America, Julia Roberts mentioned in her interview with Kamala Harris and Oprah Winfrey that she couldn't be more excited for her children to have the legacy to say that they cast their first presidential vote for Kamala Harris.
