The Self Reliance ending is more about bonding, rather than about whether the protagonist, Tommy, wins the game. This American thriller follows the story of a man (Tommy) who in an attempt to add some spice to his boring routine life, joins a dark web reality TV game and discovers there's a lot to live for.

Self Reliance is an action thriller that jumps right into action when Tommy (Jake Johnson) joins a mysterious game on the dark web, created by Andy Samberg, which quickly turns into a perilous adventure in which he must save his life from assassins while battling to survive 30 days.

According to the game, Tommy needs to be with someone all the time, which exposes his alienation from friends and family. The game's ostensibly straightforward rules suggest that players can earn a significant prize by spending a whole month with their families.

Tommy and Maddy (Anna Kendrick) while spending time together at the motel come to know about a man who says he too is a part of the game. While Tommy seems happy, Maddy is not. The man explains that the assassins dress up in such ridiculous costumes as it's a comedy show (dubbed Delusions of Grandeur) that particularly picked up unhappy and dissatisfied people like Tommy.

Maddy decides to leave at the risk of her life and Tommy goes to his sister's house, where he threatens the people in charge of the game, including the one who had killed Andy, the creator.

On day 26, Tommy gets on a private jet as instructed, after hearing that Maddy is alive. He reaches her house with James (his companion in the game). He is relieved after seeing Maddy alive. The reason, as she explains, is that she was never a player.

Tommy is called home as there's an emergency, but when he tries to explain the game to his family, nobody believes him. So, he leaves with James and they spend a night at a homeless camp, where he finds out that James is Walter. James disappears on day 27.

On day 30, toward Self Reliance ending, Tommy meets Andy Samberg, who asks him to choose between leaving without the prize money or seeing the game through. Tommy decides to continue and is dropped off at a warehouse where after the assassins chase him to the top floor. He realizes then that he has won and is congratulated by the team.

Overall, the Self Reliance ending is a happy one. Tommy's tooth is fixed, he makes it through the game - becoming the first winner, and he and Walter shift into an apartment. The prize money, Tommy explains to his family, will be given in installments over 12 years.

As for Maddy, Tommy still admires her beauty and wants to get back in touch with her, even though she admitted to having lied to him. Tommy approaches Maddy's house in the Self Reliance ending scene and knocks on her door, drawing the story to a close.
