According to a report by Rolling Stone dated December 16, 2024, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson became the first member of the Supreme Court to perform on Broadway. She appeared only for a one-night role during the showing of the musical on December 14, 2024.
The Broadway musical Jackson was a part of is a "what if" perspective on Shakespeare's popular classic Romeo and Juliet, wherein the musical showcases what would happen if Juliet didn't kill herself. Additionally, the musical features tracks produced by Max Martin.

On December 10, 2024, the & Juliet Broadway Instagram page announced Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson's appearance in their musical, adding that she would be engaging in a public talkback after the performance.
The post mentioned an excerpt from Jackson's 2024 memoir Lovely One, wherein she mentioned that she is a girl from Miami with a modest background and "an unabashed love of theater" who dreamt of ascending to the highest court in the land one day.
"I had said so in one of my supplemental application essays [to Harvard]. I expressed that I wished to attend Harvard as I believed it might help me ‘to fulfill my fantasy of becoming the first Black, female Supreme Court justice to appear on a Broadway stage’,” Jackson wrote.
The & Juliet Broadway Instagram page mentioned that they were about to make Jackson's teenage dream come true. Additionally, on December 16, 2024, the Broadway page posted a behind-the-scenes video showcasing Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson's journey from arriving at the musical's reading to taking a bow with the cast on stage.
The behind-the-scenes video features Jackson rehearsing her songs and choreography, costume trials, hair, and makeup, and a snippet of her running to the stage after her name was announced as a "very special guest". At the end of the video, Jackson exclaims:
"I did it! I made it to Broadway."
Moreover, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson spoke to NPR's Wait Wait … Don't Tell Me on December 14, 2024, a few hours before she appeared on the Broadway stage. Talking about the same, Jackson said:
"They have invited me to do a special walk-on role that I'm told they wrote for me. So I'm very excited."
She told NPR about getting a call from someone saying they knew it was her lifelong dream. Jackson then confirmed that it has been her dream to "be a Broadway performer and a justice."
During her interview with NPR, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson told the publication that she pursued theater during her time at Harvard and participated in a production of Little Shop of Horrors. Jackson also shared that she took a drama class in which she was a scene partner with American actor and film producer, Matt Damon.
