Succession season 4 has barely held back anything in its six-episode run, with numerous twists, major character farewells, and changing power dynamics scattered across the complicated chessboard of family drama. The seventh episode of the season, which premiered on May 8, 2023, did quite the same with the story as it introduced new grievances and an even bigger plan from the main players like Kendall Roy.
Titled Tailgate Party, this episode focused on the top Waystar Royco employees and other wealthy individuals showing up to tailgate the election at Tom's penthouse. This party not only gave a glimpse at some of the future developments that may ensue in Waystar Toyco under the leadership of the CEBros, Kendall and Roman, but also focused on some personal drama involving some of the most important characters like Gerri and Shiv.
Succession season 4 episode 7 recap: Five major events that could shape the future of the show
1) Kendall & Frank's plot to have Waystar Buy GoJo
This episode featured several indications that Kendall Roy may try to reverse the GoJo deal and try to buy out Matsson's company instead of allowing a takeover. This was solidified by the revelation that Matsson made to Shiv at the party. He said that GoJo's growth rate of new subscribers has been massively overinflated, indicating that Kendall's plan was working.
The final sequence also saw Kendall discuss this idea with Frank.
2) Logan's funeral plans
While it has been some time without the familiar patriarch of the family around, there seems to be still some confusion around Late Logan Roy's funeral. This episode of Succession revealed that Roman was going to take the duty of speaking at the funeral, which could likely cause more drama later.
3) The end of Conor's presidential race?
Conor Roy's presidential race has been one of the funnier interludes of the serious family drama. But this episode finally saw someone tell him it was a bad idea and that he should step back, though for different reasons.
Roman offers Conor a political job in a foreign country in exchange for dropping out of the election, as Connor's 1% was vital to Mencken's success. Conor initially agreed on Oman but ended by saying he was not stepping back.
4) The return of ATN's prominence
While ATN has always been one of the most important aspects of Succession, it has not seen the complete effect and importance of the news channel. This episode, however, gave a glimpse at the effect of the political race and its repercussions. This episode of Succession revealed that Kendall's daughter was bullied on the street due to her father's conservative news network's influence.
5) Bad goes worse for Shiv and Tom?
In the biggest twist of the episode, Tom and Shiv, who looked closer than ever in the previous episode after a long time, involved themselves in a verbal spat that had no bounds. Tom, enraged by the fact that Shiv was telling people Tom was going to get fired, hit back at her with the utmost brutality, bringing the party to a juvenile end.
This arc is sure to continue later.
Succession season 4, episode 7 is now streaming on HBO Max.
