More about Sziget Music and Culture Festival
Sziget Festival was founded by a group of artists and musicians following the collapse of the USSR and the consequent independence of Hungary. The festival was originally called Diáksziget (Student Island). The first few festivals ran at a loss.
The festival gained a new life after Pepsi started sponsoring the event, with the festival being renamed Pepsi Sziget, which continued till 2002, when Pepsi ended the sponsorship and the festival gained its current name of Sziget Festival.
It is primarily popular with European festival attendees, with more than 50 percent of the festival's crowd coming from countries such as Netherlands. Belgium, the UK, Germany, Italy, France, Ireland, and Romania.
