An independent autopsy report of 35-year-old Lashawn Thompson, who died in Atlanta's Fulton County Jail in September 2022 after being consumed by bed bugs, states that he passed away due to "due to severe neglect" in the prison's psychiatric wing. On May 22, the lawyers for Thompson's family released an autopsy report, which was funded by the Autopsy Initiative of the Know Your Rights Camp.
Written by Dr. Roger A. Mitchell Jr., chair of the pathology department at Howard University College of Medicine, the report says:
"Mr. Thompson was neglected to death."
Moreover, the report states Thompson's cause of death to be "Complications due to Severe Neglect," along with "Untreated Decompensated Schizophrenia" listed as an additional cause.
35-year-old Thompson passed away in September 2022 in Fulton County Jail, three months after he moved to the prison. In April 2023, a lawyer representing Thompson's family, Michael Harper, posted images showing Thompson's face and torso covered with insects, sparking public anger.
After the new autopsy report went viral, netizens were not pleased by the adverse conditions that Thompson was kept in, with one of them tweeting:
Twitter reacts to Lashawn Thompson’s autopsy report
After the new autopsy report of Lashawn Thompson, who had schizophrenic, went viral, Twitterati was left in disbelief. Several users called it "disgusting" and prayed for Thompson. Others blamed the government for keeping the deceased 35-year-old in "inhumane" conditions and stated that his death could have been avoided.
The new autopsy report also listed thirst and malnutrition to be contributing factors to Lashawn Thompson's death.
Thompson's death gained massive traction after last month, his family's lawyer Michael Harper, released pictures of his body covered with bugs.
According to the autopsy report, a fatal cardiac arrhythmia was caused by a combination of dehydration, fast weight loss, and starvation, which were further aggravated by untreated decompensated schizophrenia.
The word "neglect" in his autopsy report referred to the bed bugs that were found on Thompson's skin while he was being treated for the illness that killed him.
Dr. Roger A. Mitchell Jr. wrote that because Lashawn Thompson did not get appropriate medical treatment, or the necessary amount of food, water, and shelter, his death is a homicide.
In a previous report, the office of the Fulton County medical examiner said that Thompson's body showed no clear signs of violence, but it did have a "severe bed bug infestation." It says that the cause of his death is "undetermined."
Ben Crump, a prominent civil rights attorney who represents the family, stated that the new autopsy "confirms that this is one of the most deplorable in-custody deaths" in American history.
