"We all became very concerned for her safety": Wendy Williams documentary producer confesses they weren't aware of her dementia while filming
According to a report by The Independent dated February 27, 2024, Wendy Williams' documentary Where Is Wendy Williams premiered on February 24, 2024, showcasing multiple scenes where the former broadcaster was confused, unsteady, and drunk. The documentary also showed how Williams' manager would frequently find liquor bottles hidden throughout her apartment.
Talking about the documentary, executive producer Erica Hanson mentioned:
“We all became very concerned for her safety. To be honest, I was so concerned she would fall down the stairs and for numerous different reasons,"
The executive producer added that soon after Williams' son informed the filmmakers that the former broadcaster had dementia, they turned the cameras off. Handson said that they decided to "stop filming as a team" and kept hoping that Williams was going to get better. However, it became apparent to the team that she wasn't going to get better and "really needed help".
In February 2024, Wendy Williams' team announced that she had been diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia and aphasia. The statement mentioned that Williams has been open about her medical struggles with Lymphedema and Graves' Disease in the past and that she underwent multiple tests in 2023 after her memory began failing and she began to act erratically and lose words.
According to details of Wendy Williams' guardian Sabrina Morrissey's legal filing in November 2024, Wells Fargo undertook the step of initiating a guardianship proceeding by itself in the Supreme Court of New York after becoming aware of a disturbing pattern concerning Williams' finances and welfare in January 2022.
However, during an interview on Good Morning America in March 2022, Williams said that she was of sound mind and alleged that people said crazy things about her mental condition as they wanted to control her financial accounts.
In other news, Wendy Williams' guardian and the A+ E Networks, involved in the release of her documentary are in a legal battle. Williams' guardian alleged that the former broadcaster received only $82,000 for the docuseries, claiming additional compensation and redaction of sensitive details of Williams' health and private life to protect her dignity.
However, A + E Networks has denied Morrissey's claims and argued that Williams' guardian failed to safeguard the former broadcaster during the production process.
