John Stamos addressed the online criticism over his bald cap tribute to close friend and former Full House co-star Dave Coulier. On Monday, November 18, Stamos took to Instagram and posted photos featuring himself in a bald cap alongside Coulier, who shaved his head as he was battling stage 3 non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
However, Stamos' post was met with social media backlash as some users criticized the actor for not cutting his hair. On Thursday, November 21, Stamos told TMZ that he was "shocked" when he saw the backlash as he and Dave shared a good laugh about the bald cap.
Stamos also stated that he couldn't cut his hair due to contractual obligations. The actor spoke about the people who made negative comments and said:
"What they should be doing instead of making silly little videos, or doing comments — they should call their doctor, make an appointment. I think that's the whole point of this. It's been Dave's message."
"I’m just embarrassed": John Stamos on the backlash for his bald cap tribute
While walking through the parking lot of the Los Angeles International Airport, John Stamos spoke about the bald cap controversy to a TMZ reporter. Stamos recalled being on the plane to go see his "brother" Dave Coulier who wanted Stamos to visit and shave his head to start his cancer journey.
The actor added that as he got on the plane, he received news that his best friend passed away from a heart attack. However, John Stamos stated that he did not let this affect his moment with Coulier and "cried privately".
Stamos further said that he made Dave Coulier laugh "so freaking hard" when he showed up sporting a bald cap from a studio. As mentioned earlier, Stamos stated that he couldn't cut his hair as he was doing a show.
However, the actor said that seeing the amount of negative reactions he received stumped him. Stamos added:
"First I’ll say, I’m just embarrassed, and they're embarrassing. But when I started seeing this blowback, I’m just like, 'What?' I couldn't figure it out. I still don't know 100 percent."
As mentioned earlier, John Stamos said that the people who spewed negativity should go see a doctor. The actor added that although he doesn't usually look at such comments, this incident "really hurt" because he did not understand it. The actor reiterated that he was "embarrassed" for people who wasted time on this when all he did was cheer up a friend.
Stamos further recalled that it was "incredible" spending time with Coulier, as they laughed, cried, told stories, and watched old movies and videos together. When asked if the duo watched Full House Stamos said that they did not. The actor added that he was sorry he got "sucked into cancel culture".
After the backlash increased, Dave Coulier stepped in to defend Stamos. In an Instagram post on Tuesday, November 19, Coulier expressed his disappointment about the negative comments. The actor wrote:
"It's our friendship (me and John) and this is how we are handling a very tough time. I’m a comedian and humor is what drives me. John knows how to cheer me up and I laughed out loud when he arrived wearing a bald cap — being a true loving friend and brother."
John Stamos' wife Caitlin McHugh wrote in the comments section of his post from November 18, and asked the people writing negative comments to "look inward". McHugh added that instead of "tearing down others" people should think about how they could "bring joy" to the people they love.
