On October 1, 2024, CBS aired the Vice Presidential Debate between Governor Tim Walz and Ohio Senator JD Vance. While the former appeared in the debate wearing a bracelet often sported by Taylor Swift fans, Vance wore a pink tie to the debate.
Apart from the arguments between the vice presidential picks, the internet was fixated on JD Vance's pink tie and they took to X (formerly Twitter) to express their opinions.
An X user suggested that Vance's team might have put him up to wearing the pink tie, given he has allegedly offended a lot of women with his comments.
"JD wearing a pink tie tonight because they know he's repelled millions of women with his creepy, weirdo comments and they think this look will make him less offensive to females."
Users on X expressed frustration over the senator's pink tie and eyeliner, with one suggesting the stylist should be fired, another joking about the tie's message, and a third questioning its meaning.
"getting unreasonably pissed off by the combo of jd vance’s jacked up eyeliner and hot pink tie clashing with the red graphics on the screen" an X user tweeted.
"I’m usually not this superficial…but whoever decided #Vance should wear a glittery hot pink tie (also accentuates the guy-liner) should be fired and never work in politics again.🤦♀️😂 #vpdebate" another X user mentioned.
"JD’s pink textured tie — why ? What’s it saying to the people ? “Hate women ? Me ? Impossible, just look at my tie !” an internet user remarked.
Some internet users also criticized the 40-year-old's decision to wear a pink tie to the debate:
"Who is Vance trying to appeal to with a hot pink tie? #VPDebate2024" an X user questioned.
“If you wear the pink tie, everyone will forget that women hate you.” -JD Vance’s stylist probably" another X user commented.
"is jd vance wearing that godawful neon pink tie to distract Americans from noticing how punchable his face is?" another internet user stated.
"We’ve got to deal with it"- JD Vance comments on gun violence in America
On September 5, 2024, JD Vance attended a rally in Phoenix where he commented on school shootings. He described them as a "fact of life" and emphasized that security should be hardened. Vance stated:
“If these psychos are going to go after our kids we’ve got to be prepared for it. We don’t have to like the reality that we live in, but it is the reality we live in. We’ve got to deal with it.”
Vance was asked what could be done to stop school shootings, and he responded that access to guns could be further restricted. He also suggested that Congress must allocate more funds to schools for security.
“I don’t like that this is a fact of life. But if you are a psycho and you want to make headlines, you realize that our schools are soft targets. And we have got to bolster security at our schools. We’ve got to bolster security so if a psycho wants to walk through the front door and kill a bunch of children they’re not able,” Vance said.
During his debate with Tim Walz on October 1, 2024, Vance commented on the issue, arguing that "stronger doors and windows" in schools would help prevent school shootings. He also suggested that increasing school resources would be a key part of the solution. Vance added that schools need to be made safer with plans and solutions curated using "common sense."
The 60th quadrennial U.S. presidential election will be held on Tuesday, November 5, 2024.
