According to multiple sources, Luigi Mangione appeared for his arraignment in New York on December 23, 2024, for murder charges in the killing of UnitedHeatlhcare's CEO Brian Thompson on December 4, 2024. Images of Mangione appearing for his arrangement went viral, especially a tweet by @21metgala talking about the sweater he was wearing.
The tweet read:
"Luigi Mangione was seen wearing a $1,000 Maison Margiela sweater at the Manhattan Criminal Court in New York."
The tweet has garnered 2.9 million views since it was posted and also led to the brand Maison Margiela trending on the social networking platform.
Maison Margiela is a Parisian haute couture house established on "ideas of nonconformity and the subversion of norms" as per the brand's official website.
Additionally, the Maison Margiela sweater reportedly worn by Luigi Mangione as claimed by @21metgala costs $1,250.
However, fashion commentator Antonio Padilla corrected @21metgala's claim via a tweet on December 24, 2024, and mentioned that Luigi Mangione was not wearing a Maison Margiela sweater. Padilla's tweet added that the sweater worn by Mangione was a "Nordstrom Merino Wool sweater he got on sale lol".
Luigi Mangione pleaded not guilty to terror and state murder charges
Luigi Magione was arrested in a Pennsylvania McDonald's on December 9, 2024, following a five-day search. The police recoved a gun from Mangione which matched the one used in the shooting of Brian Thompson and a fake ID.
The accused was also carrying a notebook which expressed anger toward the health insurance industry as reported by federal prosecutors.
According to a report by Time dated December 23, 2024, on December 23, 2024, Mangione pleaded not guilty to state murder and terror charges in the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brain Thompson.
Additionally, Mangione's attorney Karen Friedman Agnifilo complianed that comments coming from New York's mayor Eric Adams, would make it difficult for his client to undergo a fair trial.
The publication reported that Luigi Mangione's lawyer told a judge that government officials includign New York's mayor have turned his client into a "political pawn", diminishing Mangione's rights as a defendent and also befouling the jury pool.
Commenting on Adams' involvement, Agnifilo reffered to the charges the New York mayor is facing in a corruption case in which he has pleaded not guilty. Agnifilo said:
“The mayor should know more than anyone of the presumption of innocence that he too is afforded when dealing with his own issues."
Additionally, Mangione's attorney commented on the accused's return to New York being made into an unnecessary spectacle by stating:
“He was on display for everyone to see in the biggest stage perp walk I’ve ever seen in my career. It was absolutely unnecessary. He is being treated like a human pingpong ball between warring jurisdictions here.”
According to a report by Forbes, dated December 23, 2024, Luigi Mangione is currently facing 11 charges.
These include first and second-degree murder, two counts of criminal possession of a weapon in second degree, one count of criminal possession of a weapon in th fouth degree, four counts of criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree, second-degree muder as an act of terrorism, a count of criminal possession of a forged instrument in the second degree.
If convicted on the state charges, Luigi Mangione could possibly receive the punishment of upto life in prison without chances of parole. If convicted on federal charges, there is a possibilty of him being put on death penalty.
