According to a report by NBC News dated December 10, 2024, the suspect in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson's case, Luigi Mangione belonged to a group of Ivy League gamers who played the game Among Us.
Among Us is an online social deduction, multiplayer game published and developed by Innersloth LLC game studio. The game takes place in a space-themed setting wherein the players are cartoon astronauts comprising crewmates and imposters. Imposters embody assassins who kill crewmates while crewmates complete assigned tasks in the game and vote out who they believe the imposter is.
Alejandro Romero, who attended the University of Pennsylvania with Luigi Mangione was a member of the same Among Us Discord group and commented on the irony of Mangione being arrested for a murder stating:
"I just found it extremely ironic that, you know, we were in this game and there could actually be a true killer among us,"
Romero said that as soon as Mangione's photo and name began showing up on X, one of his friends texted asking if Romero knew Mangione. This led to Romero calling some of his friends and vice-versa. He also said that he hadn't spoken to anyone that day "who wasn't already aware of what had happened."
