Jazz and rock saxophonist Mars Williams recently passed away on November 20, 2023, at the age of 68. He was reportedly suffering from ampullary cancer for a year which led to his demise. According to Mayo Clinic, ampullary cancer is formed in the digestive system known as the ampulla of Vater where the bile duct and pancreatic duct join, emptying into the small intestine.

Mars' family expressed their grief in a statement shared with Stereo Gum, stating that he was surrounded by his family members and friends. They added:

"Until the end, Mars' inexhaustible humor and energy, and his love for music, pushed him forward. As it became clear in later summer that his treatment options were coming to an end, he chose to spend six weeks of time he had left living he had since he was a teenager – out on the road performing night after night."

The family stated that Mars Williams' final performances with The Psychedelic Furs will remain alive among everyone and that his contributions will be remembered forever. The statement ended by saying:

"We'll be working to plan a celebration of life fitting for someone who was a hero to so many. We'll send out information about that when possible."
