Gunther was never meant to be a speaking character; James Michael Tyler was actually a barista before getting the role; James got the screen time because he was the only one who could use an espresso machine, etc. are a few of the lesser known facts about Gunther/James Michael Tyler.

James was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2018, and after three years of treatment, he passed away in 2021 at the age of 59.

James Michael Tyler's portrayal of Gunther was the most well-known character on the American hit sitcom Friends after the six leads. He appeared on the show nearly 150 times. Ross is frequently the target of his sarcasm, but his recurring role is best known for his unspoken love for Rachel and hatred of anyone dating her.

Without a doubt, James' iconic portrayal of Gunther and the actor who played him will always be missed. James gave such a passionate performance as Gunther and managed to win so many people over with just a few one-liners. There is a reason why, after the lead six, his character is the most adored by viewers. Ironically, compared to the other six characters, he has the fewest lines, yet he conveys so much with his presence and expressions.

Who is James Michael Tyler?

On May 28, 1962, American actor James Michael Tyler was born. He is best known for his role as Gunther in the NBC sitcom Friends. Before he started acting, he was a production assistant. In his early employment, he assisted in the filming of Little Boy and Fat Man. He also played Oscar Bevins in the suspenseful movie Motel Blue from 1997.

He met Barbara Chadsey, the woman he would marry and have as his first wife, in 1995 at a restaurant called the Bourgeois Pig. In 1988, he moved to Los Angeles and started working at Guitar Center.

Because of his real-life barista experience, a Friends assistant director thought it would be a good idea to have him work behind the counter at Central Perk. This would make the set appear more "realistic." He is the actor who has appeared on Friends the most after the lead six, having appeared in 148 of the 236 episodes over the course of a decade.

The night before his appearance on Friends, Tyler was asked if he could practice bleaching his hair by a friend who is a hair stylist. Tyler agreed, and the writers of Friends loved it so much that it ended up being a constant feature of his persona. In the end, he had to bleach his hair every week for ten years.

In 2014, to commemorate Friends' 20th anniversary, he made appearances at a Central Perk replica in SoHo. Tyler made an appearance in the Showtime comedy "Episodes" as an ice hockey coach after Matt LeBlanc's failed attempt to persuade the other main Friends cast members to take part in the promotional video for the fictitious television series "Pucks."

How did James Michael Tyler die?

Tyler passed away from prostate cancer at the age of 59 after battling it for three years and playing such an iconic role that left a mark on our memories. Sadly, we won't ever get to see Gunther in action again. In HBO Max's “Friends: The Reunion," he made a brief cameo.

Tyler lost his battle with prostate cancer in 2021, at his Los Angeles home, after the disease was first discovered in 2018. According to his representative, Toni Benson, "Michael loved live music, cheering on his Clemson Tigers, and would often find himself in fun and unplanned adventures, if you met him once, you made a friend for life," the statement read.

The actor appeared in numerous films and television programs, such as "Scrubs," "Modern Music," and "Sabrina the Teenage Witch," but he is best known for his ten seasons as Gunther, the Central Perk coffee shop manager and Rachel's admirer, on the venerable 90s sitcom. "Friends" creators Marta Kauffman and David Crane told CNN in a statement that Tyler was a "genuinely kind, sweet man."

Tyler made his stage-four prostate cancer diagnosis and claims that it was found during a routine physical examination when he was 56 years old when he made an appearance on NBC's Today Show in June. He claimed that the cancer had spread to his bones and that, as a result, he was unable to walk.

What was Gunther’s last name?

Although Gunther is constantly present in the friends' daily lives, he never joins their group. This develops into a running joke. At Ross' bachelor party, Gunther asks Chandler to give him his last name after being introduced as his best man. Chandler responds dejectedly, "Central Perk?" Another example of this is Ross's party after being given tenure. Ross orders six glasses, to which Gunther cheerfully responds, "You want me to join you?" “Oh, I assumed Joey was present. Five is good," says Ross.

Gunther gets along with the friends, though, so well that he frequently gets invited to their informal events, such as Phoebe's birthday party, Rachel's birthday party, Emily's farewell party, Ross' bachelor party, Rachel's early surprise birthday party, and Chandler and Monica's Halloween party. He doesn't participate in the official celebrations, like Ross' wedding in London or Monica and Chandler's wedding, but he does go to Phoebe's wedding.

Most probably, his character was never given a last name, as initially it was not intended to speak. He was just a common barista taking and getting orders. So, he was just Gunther.
