The world's oldest dog, Bobi, passed away on October 21, 2023, at the age of 31. His death was announced by veterinarian Dr. Karen Becker through a Facebook post where she included a picture.
"Despite outliving every dog in history, his 11,478 days on earth would never be enough for those who loved him."
According to the post, the dog's owner, Leonel Costa, revealed the secret behind the dog's long life. Costa said that the dog had access to the best nutrition and was in touch with nature for most of the time. He even mentioned that the dog was additionally getting the best veterinary care. According to Newsweek, fresh human food was the dog's main diet.
The Guardian revealed that the dog also received the title of the world's oldest dog from Guinness World Records. Bobi's date of birth was confirmed in 1992 after his registration with the veterinary service of the central Portuguese municipality of Leiria.
BBC states that Costa owned many other dogs, including Bobi's mother, who survived until she was 18. He had another dog that was 22 years old at the time of death.

According to Newsweek, the World's oldest dog lived with Leonel Costa at a Portugal-based farm. The pet belonged to the Rafeiro do Alentejo breed, which can reportedly survive up to 12 or 14 years, as per the American Kennel Club.
Green Matters revealed that the dog was never tied to a leash or chain and that the pet lived in a peaceful environment, which helped his survival over the years. Human food, dipped in water, was his basic diet. According to Guinness World Records, Leonel once said:
"Between a can of animal food or a piece of meat, Bobi doesn't hesitate and chooses our food."
As per Guinness World Records, his eyesight was affected by May 2023, and he started colliding with objects.
In his last years, the pet was not as active as he was in the past and mostly rested in the bed or near the fire. Green Matters also stated that the pet spent more time with the family cats.
He once suffered from a breathing problem in 2018 and collapsed immediately. He was taken to a hospital, but he managed to survive. According to Leonel, the dog was taken for frequent checkups, and as per the results, he was "doing well" despite his age.
Bobi was born when his owner was a child
Bobi was born when Costa was a kid. He was among the four puppies of their dog Gia, as per Green Matters. Costa said older people used to bury a few pets in case more animals were inside a house. Although Costa's parents buried the rest of the puppies, one puppy was left behind, and Costa secretly raised him.
When Costa's parents discovered the puppy, they decided to keep him after punishing Costa and his brother. The family slowly developed an affection towards the puppy.
