American actor Bruce Willis is suffering from Aphasia. Aphasia is a disorder that affects how you communicate and impacts your speech and writing ability too.
Bruce Willis is known for his roles in films and TV series such as Moonlighting, the Die Hard franchise, The Last Boy Scout, Death Becomes Her, Pulp Fiction, 12 Monkeys, The Fifth Element, Armageddon, The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Sin City, Red, Moonrise Kingdom, Looper, and Red 2. He took a step away from his acting career in March 2022 due to his sickness.
The now-retired American actor is suffering from a cognitive disorder that is slowly robbing his ability to communicate. The news of his retirement from Hollywood was announced by his wife Emma Heming Willis. Heming took to her Instagram handle to jot a sad note for his fans in which she revealed the actor would be stepping away from the limelight due to his health situation.
Her post read, "To Bruce's amazing supporters, as a family we wanted to share that our beloved Bruce has been experiencing some health issues and has recently been diagnosed with aphasia, which is impacting his cognitive abilities. As a result of this and with much consideration Bruce is stepping away from the career that has meant so much to him. This is a really challenging time for our family and we are so appreciative of your continued love, compassion and support. We are moving through this as a strong family unit, and wanted to bring his fans in because we know how much he means to you, as you do to him. As Bruce always says, "Live it up" and together we plan to do just that. Love, Emma, Demi, Rumer, Scout, Tallulah, Mabel, & Evelyn."
What is Aphasia?
According to Mayo Clinic.com, Aphasia is a cognitive disorder caused by damage to the area of the brain that controls language, expression, and comprehension. The disorder affects how you communicate, and impacts your speech as well as the way you write and understand both spoken and written language. Aphasia can also usually happen after a stroke.
The disorder left Willis unable to speak properly and remember his lines. According to the director of Out of Death, the screenwriter was instructed to reduce his role and abbreviate his dialogues. The director was told to complete all of Willis' scenes in a single day of filming. Willis was given an "earwig" so that he could tell his dialogues. An earwig is when an actor would be fed his lines through an earpiece during the shooting. Many industry members claimed that Willis' health was slowly and gradually deteriorating and it was pretty evident during the shooting. Finally, Willis and his family decided that it was high time the actor needed to retire and focus on his health. The actor retired in 2022.
