The acronym "BTS" stands for "Bangtan Sonyeondan," which is Korean for "Bulletproof Boy Scouts."
The band's name has a pretty deep meaning, says band member J-Hope. "It has a profound meaning... 'Bangtan’ means to be resistant to bullets, so it means to block out stereotypes, criticisms, and expectations that aim at adolescents like bullets, to preserve the values and ideals of today’s adolescents," he spoke with Affinity Magazine. In Japan, they are known as Bōdan Shōnenda. BTS declared in July 2017 that as part of their new brand identity, their name would also stand for "Beyond the Scene." As a result, their name's connotation was expanded to include the notion of development from "a boy to an adult who opens the doors that are facing forward."
BTS declared a redesign of their logo and the expanded meaning of the letters "B.T.S." in 2017. BTS's entertainment agency, Soompi, claims that the new name represents young people who defy expectations in order to advance and avoid complacency. According to their enormous fan base, the army clearly understands the message of resilience that the name BTS stands for.
Even today some people may not be familiar with the boy band's music, but they would have read news articles about how they have sold out stadiums and broken records, as well as tales of their fans waiting in line for days to see them live, that’s how famous BTS have become. BTS only recently burst onto the music scene, but they are already dominating the charts. BTS is also referred to as the Bangtan Boys or other names that start with the letters B.T.S.
Who are BTS?
The South Korean boy band BTS was founded in 2010. The members of the group—Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V, and Jungkook—co-write and co-produce most of their songs. Their lyricism has focused on topics such as mental health, the difficulties of school-age youth and coming of age, loss, the path to self-love, individualism, and the effects of fame and recognition.
Although they started out as a hip-hop group, their musical style has evolved to incorporate a wide range of genres. Their discography and related work also contain an alternate universe plot and references to literature, philosophy, and psychological ideas.
When did BTS make their debut?
BTS debuted in 2013 under Big Hit Entertainment with the single album "2 Cool 4 Skool." They then released their first Korean and Japanese-language studio albums, Dark & Wild and Wake Up, respectively, in 2014. The group's Korean studio album, Wings (2016), was their first to sell one million copies in South Korea.
BTS became the first South Korean act to receive a gold certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for their single "Mic Drop" and the first group to top the Billboard 200 with their studio album Love Yourself: Tear (2018). By the time BTS entered the global music market, they had already spearheaded the Korean wave into the United States in 2017.
With “Love Yourself: Answer” becoming the first Korean album certified platinum by the RIAA, BTS became one of the few acts to chart four US number-one albums in less than two years in 2020. They also made history by becoming the first all-South Korean act to top the Billboard Hot 100 and Billboard Global 200 charts with their Grammy-nominated single "Dynamite."
What awards did BTS win?
The group have won numerous American Music Awards, Billboard Music Awards, Golden Disc Awards, and five Grammy Award nominations. In addition to speaking at three General Assembly sessions, they have also partnered with UNICEF to launch the "Love Myself anti-violence campaign" in 2017. The apparent "Princes of Pop" were featured on the international cover of Time magazine as "Next Generation Leaders."
BTS was named the youngest recipient of the South Korean Order of Cultural Merit in 2018 for their contributions to promoting Korean culture and language. They have also been listed on Time's lists of the 25 most influential people on the internet (2017–2019) and the 100 most influential people in the world (2019).
