Authorities have arrested 26-year-old Luigi Mangione from Altoona, as he has been charged with the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, who was shot last week. Furthermore, Luigi was also made to appear before the court upon his arrest, during which he did not enter a plea, and was ordered to be held without bail.
As per the court documents filed on Monday, December 9, 2024, Luigi Mangione is also charged with possession of a loaded firearm, possession of a forged instrument, and criminal possession of a weapon. Furthermore, at the time of Luigi’s arrest, he was searched, and the officers discovered multiple fraudulent IDs and a U.S. passport.
The police also recovered a ghost gun, a homemade firearm, a large sum of cash, and a Faraday bag, which is used to block cell signals. As per Faraday bag’s official website, these bags block the RF signals being sent or received on cell phones, and other electronic devices.
The complaint states:
"The pistol had one loaded Glock magazine with six nine-millimeter full metal jack rounds. There was also one loose nine-millimeter hollow point round.”
Furthermore, as per ABC News, NYPD Chief Detective Joe Kenny also claimed that the ghost gun found in Mangione’s possession did not have a serial number, and hence, was untraceable.
For the unversed, Brian Thompson, 50-year-old, was gunned down around 7 am in the morning on December 4, 2024, as he arrived for the UnitedHealth Group’s annual investor conference. The surveillance footage caught the face of the shooter wearing a jacket and carrying a gray backpack.
Luigi Mangione was arrested from a McDonald’s in Altoona after an anonymous tip
After UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was shot and killed last week, the police broadly distributed the picture of Luigi Mangione. The suspect was then seen sitting at a McDonald’s in Altoona.
As soon as the police received the anonymous tip, the officers made their way to the location and confronted the alleged shooter.
Altoona Patrolman Tyler Frye spoke at a press conference held on Monday night and revealed:
"My partner and I recognized him immediately. Just from what we saw in the media, with photos, videos, we just didn't even think twice about it, we knew that was our guy."
Furthermore, as Luigi Mangione was searched at the time of arrest, the authorities also discovered a note that expressed “some ill will toward corporate America." The note consisted of UnitedHealthcare’s name and read:
“These parasites had it coming. I do apologize for any strife and trauma, but it had to be done."
On the other hand, the family of the suspect also released a statement on Monday, after Luigi Mangione's arrest. As per CNN, the family claimed:
“Our family is shocked and devastated by Luigi’s arrest. We offer prayers to the family of Brian Thompson and we ask people to pray for all involved. We are devastated by this news.”
As per CNBC, Luigi Mangione hails from Baltimore and has studied in premium universities since he graduated in 2020. While the police are currently investigating the matter, the alleged motive of the shooting has not been revealed yet.
However, at the moment, the suspect continues to remain in Huntingdon Jail and will be given a later date to appear before the court.
