Andrew Tate was detained by a special organized crime unit of Romanian officials along with his brother Tristan Tate and two other Romanian suspects based on human trafficking, rape, and organized crime allegations.
Andrew Tate has been a controversial media figure since he began making videos on career, finances, mental health, and personal health, mainly oriented toward male audiences, especially teenage boys. Andrew was a professional kickboxer and did exceptionally well during his career and then later retired. After retiring from sports, he then tried a stint in the famous reality TV show Big Brother.
However, he was evicted from the house in just 6 days after a video of him beating up a woman came to light. Andrew then began providing paid kickboxing courses and memberships from his website. Andrew Tate started attracting an audience after he began sharing insensitive, sexist, and misogynistic tweets and statements in the name of being a self-proclaimed 'alpha male'. While many are completely against him and his ideology, he also has a massive fan following who are avid followers of what he preaches.
Why was Andrew Tate arrested?
According to the Directorate for the Investigation of Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) who are involved in this case, Andrew Tate, his brother Tristan Tate and two other Romanian citizens (a former policewoman) were involved in human trafficking, rape, and organized crime and hence were arrested.
The Tate brothers were arrested from their villa in Romania on December 29, 2022. As per a video shared by the Romanian authorities, the officials also found guns, money, and knives, out on display in one of Tate's rooms. According to Reuters, revealing details about the arrest, the prosecutors said, "The four suspects... appear to have created an organized crime group to recruit, house, and exploit women by forcing them to create pornographic content meant to be seen on specialized websites for a cost."
The brothers would be detained for 24 hours. The prosecutors found six women who had been sexually exploited by the suspects. This is not the first time Tate had been detained by the police for the allegation of human trafficking. In April 2022, the Tate brothers were under criminal investigation since then according to reports.
The arrest came just a day after Tate was indulged in a heated Twitter spat with teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg.
Tate has recently made headlines as he has been charged in Romania with rape, human trafficking, and leading an organized crime group involved in the sexual exploitation of women. Alongside him, his brother Tristan and two associates have also been charged, although they have all vehemently denied the allegations.
Why was Andrew Tate arrested in April 2022?
On April 11, 2022, the U.S. embassy alerted the Romanian authorities that an American woman might be held against her will. The police immediately raided two properties in search of the woman and one of the properties belonged to Andrew Tate. There were two women found (one American and one Romanian) who claimed that they were held against their will.
Both women were made to go through mental strain and physical abuse. This sparked a DIICOT investigation against the Tate brothers for human trafficking and rape. The two were detained the same day and were questioned for five hours. However, the two were released later. When questioned about it, Tate rubbished the claims and defended himself by saying it was just a case of 'swatting'.
What happened between Andrew Tate and Greta Thunberg?
Media personality Andrew Tate and climate activist Greta Thunberg were recently a part of a heated Twitter exchange that took the internet by storm and divided it too. It all began after the former kickboxer tagged Thunberg and tweeted about his 33 cars and their enormous emissions. Tate's tweet read, "Hello @GretaThunberg, I have 33 cars. My Bugatti has a w16 8.0L quad-turbo. My TWO Ferrari 812 competizione have 6.5L v12s. This is just the start. Please provide your email address so I can send a complete list of my car collection and their respective enormous emissions."
Replying to this tweet, the teenage climate activist wrote, "yes, please do enlighten me. email me at [email protected]." This comeback is what made the spat go viral on Twitter. Netizens began getting engaged with it and were looking out for more of it.
While Thunberg didn't say anything much about it later, Tate then tweeted and retweeted a much more hateful comment and took a brutal jab at Greta Thunberg and her gender. Tate shared a video in his tweet which showed him sitting in a silk robe, smoking a cigar. In the video, he made fun of Thunberg's pronouns and called her a 'slave of the matrix'. As the video continues, Tate asks a person off-screen to hand him two boxes of pizza and reminds them not to recycle, which was another jibe at Thunberg.
A day after this ugly spat, Tate was arrested by the Romanian authorities over the human trafficking and rape allegations. It's being claimed that the pizza box in the video which Tate told the off-screen person to hand over, had Romanian text on the sides, and that's how the Romanian officials were alerted that Tate was in the country.
After his arrest, Greta Thunberg made another cheeky comment on Tate's arrest due to the pizza box in the video. Her tweet read, “This is what happens when you don’t recycle your pizza boxes.”
