He gained widespread recognition for his role in the popular television series "21 Jump Street," which aired from 1987 to 1991. In the 1990s, Depp became known for his collaborations with director Tim Burton, including "Edward Scissorhands," "Sleepy Hollow," and "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street." The Trial of Johnny Depp and Amber Heard Explained

Johnny Depp and Amber Heard's highly publicized legal battle began in 2016, when Heard filed for divorce from Depp after just over a year of marriage, citing "irreconcilable differences." In May 2016, Heard was granted a temporary restraining order against Depp, alleging that he had been verbally and physically abusive towards her during their relationship.

In August 2016, the couple reached a settlement in their divorce case, with Depp agreeing to pay Heard a $7 million settlement, which she pledged to donate to charity. At the time, both parties released a joint statement saying that their relationship had been "intensely passionate and at times volatile" but that they were "pleased to have reached a resolution" and would "withdraw any and all claims" against each other.

However, the legal battle between Depp and Heard reignited in 2018 when Depp sued the British tabloid newspaper The Sun for libel after it referred to him as a "wife-beater" in an article about his relationship with Heard. The trial, which took place in July 2020, lasted for three weeks and featured testimony from both Depp and Heard, as well as numerous witnesses.

The jury found that Depp and his lawyers have proved all the elements of defamation. It further proved Heard’s 2018 op-ed, which contained all her statements, was false and Depp was defamed by Heard. Depp was awarded $10 million in contemporary damages and $5 million in punitive damages by the jury from Heard. Due to the Virginia state law, the punitive damages were reduced to $350,000.

The jury further stated that Heard’s lawyers had not proven all elements of defamation. $2 million was awarded to Heard in contemporary damages to be paid from Depp but wasn’t rewarded with punitive damages.
