Netflix’s 1899 mystery series is a completely original story. It is not an adaptation of any previous fictional work, nor is it based on novels, previous films, or television programs.

1899 is a German science-fiction mystery thriller TV series that showcases the events involving the ships Kerberos and Prometheus, which are fictional and not grounded in reality. There have been a number of lost ships in the sea, but 1899 makes no reference to any of them. Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar are the makers of the show, who are also the creators of the hit series "Dark." 1899 was aired on Netflix on 17 November 2022.

The first season of the science-fiction mystery drama 1899 consists of eight episodes in total. Every episode lasts almost an hour, but it does not seem to be a standalone series. Netflix did not officially announce whether 1899 was going to have a second season, but creators Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar think it will. The finale of the season ends with a cliffhanger, so we are hopeful that Netflix will give a second season the go-ahead as soon as possible.

Are 1899 and Dark connected?

Since the creators of the show 1899 are Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar, who are the makers of the science fiction thriller series Dark; fans have speculated that 1899 and Dark are connected.

However, the plots are completely different. While Dark is a time travel series that responds to the Victorian era and our near future, 1899 is about a lost ship. In this last case, European migrants traveling from London to New York are forced to work together when they get a signal from a ship that has disappeared. This is far more haunting and ghostly than Dark, which showcases science fiction in a different way.

Even if it would have been great to see the world of Dark expand in 1899, the two series are not linked by characters or similarities in the plot. But it is possible to link their worlds. Dark took place in many periods of time, moving forward and backward through time, and spans more than 160 years. Its last season took place in 1888, barely 11 years before 1899. Of course, the Dark fans speculated that 1899 could easily be linked to Dark.
