Even the creators have not revealed Penny's maiden name. However, because of her marriage to Leonard Hofstadter, her last name at the end of the show was Hofstadter.

After years of people pleading for the big reveal, it has been clarified that this was not a mistake. The Big Bang Theory producers made the executive decision that Penny's last name would have to remain unknown in order to potentially keep fans up at night because of all the buzz surrounding it.

Fans hoped that they would find out during various episodes of the series, such as at her wedding, which saw her family come out to visit for the first time, and even on the series finale. But somehow it was never released. We do know that after they got married, Penny adopted Leonard's last name, Hofstadter, so at least the show ended with her having that name. However, nobody knows what her maiden name was.

This is a question that the audience has been asking for quite some time. Is Penny's maiden name known, or is she an unnamed orphan? Even though her family pays her a visit on her wedding day, her last name is never used, even by her family. Audiences had hoped to hear it at her and Leonard's wedding, but the producers decided against it. The same thing happened on the show's finale when each of the main characters was referred to by their full names at the Nobel Prize ceremony.

Did the writers of The Big Bang Theory give Penny a last name?

The absence of a last name was initially unintentional, but as the show went on, it became clear that it was a deliberate choice. According to Newsweek, Penny's character was changed at the last minute to take the place of Katie, who was intended to be the character who lived across the hall from the two main characters. According to test audiences, Katie's personality was deemed to be far too mean and sexual for the show.

As a result, the creators of The Big Bang Theory created what would ultimately become Penny from scratch and called Cuoco, who had read for the part, back to audition for the new role.

The character “Penny” was added so late in the process of production that it seems pretty obvious for the writers and creators of the show to have overlooked giving her a last name. When fans began to inquire about Penny's last name, it was decided that adding one in at that late stage would be too evident, so she was left without one until she married Leonard and became Penny Hofstadter. And that's who she will always be to us, as Molaro said, the show's producer.

What was the reason behind not revealing Penny’s last name?

The Big Bang Theory creator Chuck Lorre reportedly once suggested that Penny's last name might be Barrington, but since there was never any verification of that on the show or behind the scenes, it would seem he was perhaps just teasing fans with a probable reveal. Steve Molaro, executive producer of The Big Bang Theory, eventually clarified that the creative team decided that “Penny” didn't need a last name after all this time because they were "nervous and superstitious" about giving her one.

Through her marriage, Molaro continued, Penny's last name "will always be Hofstadter." It's possible that the Big Bang Theory cast felt that Penny's surname couldn't possibly live up to fan expectations because of the intense pressure from the audience. Another defense might be that there didn't seem to be a natural way to reveal her last name by the time viewers began to notice that she was only partially named.

What are Kaley Cuoco’s thoughts on Penny’s last name?

Actress Kaley Cuoco wavered on the subject of her character's last name over the years as the intrigue of fans grew. She admitted in 2017 that she didn't really care what her character's hidden last name was: "It's kind of a personal thing." It appears to be a jinx. It's been so long since we've said it. She told CBS, "I feel like if we say it, the world will explode."

However, Cuoco did add that she "has an idea" about what it might be before tightening her grip and declining to divulge that information. It was never made clear if her "idea" was based on Lorre's earlier recommendation of Barrington.

In 2018, Cuoco took a slight step backward and acknowledged that she would like to know Penny's last name. Then, in May 2019, at the wrap party for the series finale, she once again wandered off course. The actress said, "I kind of love it; I kind of love that we'll never know her last name, even though the last few episodes have revealed a ton of satisfying information."
