What is The Witcher about?

The Witcher is an epic fantasy series set in the fantasy world called the Continent which is full of magic, dragons, and warring kingdoms. The series explores the backstories of each of the leading characters and how they are brought together through fate. We see Geralt encountering numerous monsters, and slaying them with his superhuman strength and abilities.

All the fragments from the past will help the plotline, where the tension of war between the Northern Kingdoms and the Nilfgaardian Empire is on the rise. The differences between humans and other creatures growing also act as a catalyst in the story. The most important aspect of the story is Ciri, who has immense power and attracts all sorts of monsters and humans toward her.

The series explores why the entire kingdom of Nilfgaard is intent on getting hold of Ciri, and why does Geralt go great lengths to protect her.

Geralt, who was played by Henry Cavill, is a Witcher who hunts monsters in exchange for money. He is also known as White Wolf, due to his infamous white hair because of his genetic modification. The witch Visenna, his mother at Kaer Morhen, handed him over to become a Witcher and his mutation gavve him superhuman strength and also his infamous white hair.

He is not a ruthless killer as he always looks at both sides to see the moral values, before taking action. For example, when he is recruited to hunt a Bruxa, a vampire that is very powerful, he attempts to cure her first, even though he has the option of killing her. He also doesn't believe in destiny, without knowing that he is already a pawn that's on the move in the game of destiny.

He also earned the name ‘The Butcher of Blaviken’ when he killed a number of assassins who posed a threat to ordinary people in Blaviken. He doesn’t realize that his journey will test him like nothing else, and that he will influence the destiny of the other two main characters – Yennefer of Vengerberg and Princess Ciri.

Yennefer is the love of Geralt’s life and is a powerful and persistent sorceress. She was originally a hunchback due to her spinal deformity, but when she decided to become a witch, in the process, she gained great beauty and power. Although she is romantically involved with Geralt, they are not an exclusive couple and break up quite a lot.

Even though she is not on good terms with Geralt, she finds Ciri at his request and starts mentoring her in the art of witchcraft, after seeing her powers. Also being a fearsome warrior, Yennefer has saved Geralt’s life a number of times and also has a huge role to play in the game of destiny.

Who is Princess Ciri?

Ciri is the princess of the kingdom of Cintra. Born to Pavetta who is a human with magical abilities and Duny, Ciri is also the granddaughter of Queen Calanthe. For saving Duny’s life, Geralt invoked The Law of Surprise and asked for ‘that which you already have but do not know’.

Pavetta was pregnant with Ciri at the time but Duny was not aware of this. Following the death of both her parents, Ciri was raised by her grandmother, she chose to keep Ciri unaware of her destiny. Ciri later finds out and was adamant about fulfilling it. As her marriage was fixed, she decides to run away from her betrothed and gets attacked by a centipede where Geralt saves her from the dryads of the forest.

Ciri and Geralt become familiar with each other’s identities, and Ciri insists on going with Geralt. He dismisses her ideas and leaves her to be brought back to her kingdom. But the play of destiny is not done with them yet, the kingdom of Cintra falls after Nilfgaardian attacks. Ciri witnesses the destruction of her own kingdom and flees for safety. She escapes from a knight who has a feathered helmet and finds refuge with a family of four.

The head of the family, Yurga was saved by Geralt, who once again invoked The Law of Surprise, asking Yurga for something at home that he did not expect. It was Ciri, as his wife had taken her in while he was away.

Geralt eventually accepts Ciri and takes her to Kaer Morhen for training. On reaching she trains to become a Witcher until Triss Merigold also a witch claims that Ciri is also a Source and can predict deaths through prophecies. On account of this new information, Geralt arranges for Ciri to be trained under Yennefer.
