French drag queen Nicky Doll is suing broadcaster and political activist Laurence Fox for a statement he gave on drag queens performing at the 2024 Paris Olympics opening ceremony. On July 27, 2024, Laurence Fox shared a video of drag queens performing at the opening ceremony of the Olympics and mentioned on X:
"No point in getting wound up when the child f****rs want to wind you up. Just laugh at the deviant little pedos. Eternity is a b***h."
Announcing a lawsuit against Laurence Fox via X (formerly Twitter), on July 28, 2024, Nicky Doll stated:
"Since you didn't learn the first time around when you called my friend @crystalwillseeu a pedo, I'm going to show you that you don't get to write things like that about queer people for the fun and the misinformation of it and go away with it. See you in court, again, @LozzaFox!"
In the tweet, Nicky Doll is referring to the libel case by RuPaul's Drag Race UK Season 1 fame Crystal against Laurence Fox in January 2024 wherein the broadcaster used the same defamatory term. The judgement of the case dated April 25, 2024, stated that Fox was to pay £180,000 to Crystal as he lost the case.
"None of the negativity really affected me": Nicky Doll comments on criticism over Olympics opening ceremony performance
In an interview with TODAY dated July 31, 2024, Nicky addressed Laurence Fox's comment on the Olympics opening ceremony performance featuring drag queens and stated that the broadcaster was about to be sued again for defamation. Nicky stated that Laurence would have to pay for the things everyone else has been saying and that it would make an example for others to "stop labeling queer people in an evil way."
Commenting on coming across criticism and trolling for the 2024 Paris Olympics opening ceremony performance, Nicky told the publication:
“I had a great time, and I still am having a great time. None of the negativity really affected me. I just saw an article on Fox News that said, 'Drag performer says that she loves ruffling feathers.’ And I’m like, yeah,”
Nicky Doll addressed the queer community's Christian allies and apologized to them in case the Olympics opening ceremony performance hurt them or was misinterpreted by them. She also hoped for more clarity and wished that people would enjoy the ceremony without uncomfortable feelings.
Additionally, on being asked if the threatening messages of critics are scary, Nicky told the publication:
"I like to take a shower in the morning with their tears. I am fine with their tears. I was able to perform for 45 minutes on a bridge in the rain and we saw my mug did not move whatsoever. I’m waterproof."
The performance of Drag Race France fames like Piche, Paloma, and Nicky Doll, amongst others at the 2024 Paris Olympics opening ceremony on July 26, 2024, sparked a debate over the internet. Celebrities like Elon Musk and internet personality Andrew Tate were quick to express their discontent with the performance, claiming it was derogatory to Christians as a certain scene allegedly resembled Da Vinci's painting, The Last Supper.
However, the official X account of the Olympics clarified that the performance was an "interpretation of the Greek God Dionysus" which makes people aware of "the absurdity of violence between human beings."
