YouTuber Norme's attempt to break the World Record for the longest time, staying awake has got social media users concerned. Norme, who boasts 1.2 million subscribers on the platform, has been on YouTube live for over 250 hours, a little over 10 days, at the time of writing this article.
The Irish-Australian content creator is aiming to stay awake for 12 days. The Guinness world record for the longest time awake was last held by Robert McDonald. Robert went 18 days and 21 hours (453 hours and 40 minutes) without sleep in 1986.
However, Guinness World Records does not monitor the record anymore since 1997 because of health concerns. The record Norme is aiming to break is of the former record-holder and San Diego citizen Randy Gardner, who stayed awake for 264.4 hours from December 1963 to January 1964.
Throughout his grueling 250-hour-plus stream, Norme started passing out on the live stream and even experienced hallucinations. The content creator eventually became incoherent and had brief moments where he faded in and out of consciousness.
The content creator's brother Don is supervising his younger brother's stream. Don can be seen helping his brother with various tasks and even splashing him with water while forcing him to stand, among other things. The YouTuber's chat at this point is constantly urging him to quit attempting the record and go to sleep for his own sake.
Social media users were very concerned about Norme's health following his attempt. Some social media users thought Norme could get "brain damage" by attempting to stay awake for more time. Everyone agreed that the YouTuber's life was in danger. Here are a few X reactions:
"Bro could cause Brain damage doing this," thought one user.
"How is putting your life in danger for clout allowed on streaming?" added another user.
"Out of all the world records why would you want to break this one 💀" thought one user.
"I genuinely don’t think he will survive if he continues," noted another user.
A few users were concerned about how the people around the content creator were letting him do this. Other users warned people not to try to attempt this.
"Doesn’t this literally kill you though? wtf are people letting him do this for?!" asked one user.
"This is dangerous, he’s too young and he could die? Why isn’t someone smacking him out of this? Go break the world record for something productive!" added another user.
"Does this fella not have a family that cares for him?" asked yet another user.
"Anyone reading this Do not do this. Inherently bad for you.", said one user.
