Kody and his polygamous family, which includes wife Robyn Brown together with ex-wives Meri Brown, Janelle Brown as well Christine Brown, are associated with the Apostolic United Brethren(AUB). The AUB is a sect related to the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (FLDS), which stems from the Mormon religion and allows followers to enter into polygamous unions.

Kody first legally married Meri, but they divorced in 2014 so that he could marry Robyn to adopt her children from a previous partnership. After their legal separation, however, Kody and Meri remained connected spiritually until they went public with their breakup in December 2022.

What is AUB religion?

The Apostolic United Brethren (AUB) represents a Mormon fundamentalist community known for practicing polygamy. The AUB has maintained a temple in Mexico since at least the 1990s, along with an endowment house in Utah since the early 1980s, and various other places of worship in Wyoming, Idaho, and Montana to accommodate its members.

Members commonly use terms such as "The Work," "The Priesthood," or simply "The Group" to refer to their organization, as opposed to the formal title "Apostolic United Brethren." Externally, it is sometimes dubbed the "Allred Group" due to the shared surname of two of its presidents.

How does AUB function, and how it got famous?

Notably, AUB members avoid describing their group as a "church." Unlike many other Mormon fundamentalist factions, they recognize the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) as a legitimate, albeit deviated and diminished, divine institution. According to religious scholar J. Gordon Melton, the AUB is considered "the more liberal branch of the Fundamentalist movement," allowing for sexual relations beyond the strict purpose of procreation.

The group gained widespread attention by releasing the popular reality TV series Sister Wives in 2010, bringing the AUB into the Hollywood spotlight.
