The prequel series 1883 premiered on December 19, 2021, on Paramount+ after Taylor Sheridan signed a five-year contract with Viacom-CBS and the MTV Entertainment Group. A new Dutton family generation will be the focus of the second prequel and spin-off, 1923, which will take place during the Western Expansion, Prohibition, and the Great Depression, which in Montana started a decade earlier. The third upcoming spin-off, "6666," which is set on the Texas ranch known as Four Sixes, depicts the present.

Following James and Margaret Dutton as they embark on their perilous journey through the Great Plains from Texas to Montana in the year 1883—Yellowstone’s 1883—tells the origin story of the Dutton family portrayed on the show. Each of its nine episodes promises lawless landscapes, violent gun battles, danger, and lots of dust.
It featured a star-studded cast, with Tim McGraw and Faith Hill serving as the main performers. Numerous award-winning actors, including Sam Elliot and Eric Nelsen, are also in attendance, along with Isabel May, LaMonica Garrett, Audie Rick, Emma Malouff, Dawn Olivieri, Marc Rissmann, James Landry Hébert, Stephanie Nur, Amanda Jaros, Noah Le Gros, and Martin Sensmeier.

In 1923, a new generation of Duttons will be introduced in the next chapter of the story of Yellowstone, according to a statement from Viacom-CBS. This generation will be followed during the periods of western expansion, Prohibition, and the Great Depression.
Although information is still lacking, Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren will play the main roles in the prequel spinoff series. According to announcements, it will premiere in December 2022 and only stream on Paramount+.

6666 portrays the raw and authentic perspective of a real cattle ranch in West Texas rather than Montana, as in Yellowstone. It is still unclear when 6666 will premiere and whether it will only be available on Paramount's streaming service. The cast has not yet been made public.

The Duttons' land is no less impermanent than anywhere else, but its grandeur and glory have a way of reminding the people who live there of their own humanity.
