The much-awaited Max Original three-part docuseries, How to Create a Sex Scandal, is all set to premiere on Tuesday, May 23, 2023, at 3:01 am ET. The docuseries will follow the story behind the infamous Mineola Swingers Club.
The case being talked about in the docuseries is titled "Trial and Error,” which began in 2005 when Margie Cantrell, a woman who had apparently adopted 27 children over 36 years of her lifetime, most of whom either fled or migrated from California to Texas in 2004, walked into the Mineola Police Department and informed the police that two of her foster children had been forced to perform “s*x shows” at the Retreat Club, a local “swingers’ club.”
The official synopsis of the docuseries, as per Warner Bros. Discovery, reads:
"In 2005, the sleepy community of Mineola, Texas, is thrown into turmoil when local children reveal shocking stories about a pedophile sex ring that took place at a local swingers club. As arrests are made, life sentences handed down, and lives ruined, it soon becomes apparent that there is a lot more to the story than meets the eye."
It continues:
"Now, the startling long-term repercussions of the scandal are revealed. With more twists and turns than a Hollywood thriller, HOW TO CREATE A SEX SCANDAL is a startling and scarcely believable telling of a crime story that really is stranger than fiction."
How to Create a Sex Scandal has been directed by Julian P. Hobbs and produced by Talos Films in association with Texas Monthly, with Scott Brown, Megan Creydt, and Madeline Bilder acting as executive producers for the same.
How to Create a Sex Scandal features snippets of testimonials from victims and reporters
The docuseries' trailer entails the horrific scandal and controversy that the revelation of the pedophile s*x ring caused in the seemingly quiet and quaint town of Mineola and is based on reporting by Texas Monthly editor Michael Hall, who also serves as a consulting producer on the series.
Hall's inclusion in the show has increased the anticipation for the docuseries as the editor was one of the original reporters on the case a decade back.
The trailer includes the archived testimonial and interviews of the five alleged child s*xual abuse victims whose claims alone, without any physical evidence or adult witness corroboration, brought about convictions in this case. The children also talk about the ways they were manipulated and essentially brainwashed into performing s*xual favors for the members of the Retreat Club.
In addition to the original testimonials of the victims and lead detectives on the case, the docuseries will provide insight into the lives of the people involved in the horrific case nearly 18 years after the actual incident. However, the names of the people involved in the documentary haven't been revealed yet.
