Jeopardy! Masters 2023 format explored
The premiere episode of Jeopardy! Masters 2023 will feature two games, each consisting of half an hour. The first half will welcome the highest-ranking champions Amy Schneider, Matt Amodio, and Andrew He. The next half will feature a competition between James Holzhauer, Mattea Roach, and Sam Buttrey.
According to the format of Jeopardy! Masters, the game will include three rounds — Jeopardy!, Double Jeopardy! and Final Jeopardy!. After 14 games (seven episodes), the top four players will be announced and they compete against each other in two semi-final rounds. Then, one of them will be eliminated, followed by the top three players in the finals.
The rankings will be based on a “match point” system, until the finals. The winner of each episode will receive three points, the second-place holder will get one point, and the third-ranker will end up with zero points. Any player who may not reach the Final Jeopardy round will automatically receive zero points.
The official website of Jeopardy! Masters further explained that until the Finals, the elimination and prizing will be based on cumulative "match points." Meanwhile, the Finals will be determined by "traditional dollar value scores," which is a two-game "total point affair" that is seen in other Jeopardy tournament finals.
The prize points for each rank are as follows:
- First place: $500,000 and Alex Trebek Trophy
- Second place: $250,000
- Third place: $150,000
- Fourth place: $100,000 (after Semifinals)
- Fifth place: $75,000 (after Episode 7)
- Sixth place: $50,000 (after Episode 7)
In the first episode, two different teams will compete as it has two games. From episodes 2 to 7, the winners from the previous game will compete against each other. Meanwhile, the third player will be picked randomly or will be someone who has not played with any of the two players.
Four contestants will be advanced to the semi-finals and the remaining two will be awarded prizes money of the fifth and sixth place holders. In the semi-finals of the game show, the four competitors will be up against each other in every possible combination over four games. Their performances will be reviewed through match points. Before the finals, the player with the lowest points will be sent home with fourth-place prize money.
The remaining three will become the finalists of Jeopardy! Masters 2023. To note, the players' “match points” will be reset to zero at the beginning of the semi-finals and finals.
The show will be hosted by Ken Jennings and will air for three weeks, but not every day and it will air at 8 pm ET on ABC.
