The ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike is a fight against the labor union, SAG-AFTRA, and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). As per reports, the SAG-AFTRA is a union that represents about 160,000, who are various actors, writers, recording artists, radio personalities, and other media professionals and they have decided to go against the AMPTP represent major motion picture studios such as Paramount, Sony, and Netflix, Walt Disney Studios, Warners Bro., and many more.

The reason for the rebellion is for better pay, working conditions, contracts that include provisions on artificial intelligence, and majorly for residuals. For the unversed, residuals are the payment that an artist or actors receive after their work is re-used beyond its initial performance. Eg: A show or film re-releasing in the theaters or digitally. As per the union, the artists are being paid very little residual.

The labor union and its members decided to go on strike in July 2023. The same month they released a statement in their press conference in which the union’s president Fran Drescher said, “We stand in solidarity in unprecedented unity. Our union and our sister unions and the unions around the world are standing by us, as well as other labor unions. Because at some point, the jig is up. You cannot keep being dwindled and marginalized, disrespected and dishonored. The entire business model has been changed by streaming, digital, AI. This is a moment of history that is a moment of truth. If we don't stand tall right now, we are all going to be in trouble. We are all going to be in jeopardy of being replaced by machines and big business who cares more about Wall Street than you and your family.”
