The Notebook is considered one of the most romantic films in history. The romance drama focuses on the first love that flourishes between a young couple played by Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams. It's so romantic that Gosling and McAdams fell in love with the set and went out for several years!
What is The Notebook about?
The film swings between two periods. An elderly man named Duke (James Garner) is now telling the young couple's story to another nursing home resident (Gena Rowlands). In the 1940s, Noah Calhoun (Gosling) was a poor sawmill worker who immediately fell for heiress Allie Hamilton (McAdams). But, Allie's parents prohibit the relationship because of the different social classes.
They separated, Noah enlisted to fight in World War II, and Allie attended high school and volunteered as a nurse. As a result of her work, she meets an injured soldier, Lon Hammond Jr. (James Marsden), who also happens to be an attorney, and they get together. But Allie never forgot Noah, and he's also longed for her the entire time.
The Notebook is based on the 1996 novel of the same name by Nicholas Sparks. The film was directed by Nick Cassavetes, with screenplay by Jeremy Leven and Jan Sardi.
Are Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams a real couple?
Rachel McAdams, 43, and Ryan Gosling, 41, stole people's hearts from the movie The Notebook. Their working relationship flourished in a true love story as well, although they had a few dramatic lines on the set. The pair were together from 2005 to 2007 and briefly brought together in 2008 until Rachel found enduring love with writer Jamie Linden and Ryan with actress Eva Mendes.
The fans were shattered by their breakup, with a woman "nearly slapping" Ryan down the street, asking why he "let a girl like Rachel go."
Trivia on The Notebook
The Notebook is, in fact, based on a real story. Nicholas Sparks' book is inspired by the grandparents of his wife of the day, Cathy, who spent more than 60 years together and inspired Sparks to write the novel.
The movie was shot backward. Allie and Noah's earlier scenes (with Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling) were shot first. Gosling loses 20 pounds of muscle, shaves off his older Noah beard, and becomes a younger Noah.
The Notebook goes all the way to the stage. In 2019, Ingrid Michaelson said she was working on music for an onstage adaptation.
