In August 2014, Douglas Bradford, a California engineer, was convicted of a first-degree murder, decades after his ex-girlfriend Lynne Knight, a nurse from Canada, was found strangled and stabbed to death in her Torrance, California, home. He was arrested in 2009 after a wire found at his mother's garage was linked to the one used to strangle Knight in 1979 and was sentenced to 26 years to life in prison.
Knight, a 28-year-old nurse, was found stabbed at least 15 times in her Torrance home in August 1979. The killer had initially tried to strangle her using a homemade garrote, before stabbing her to complete the deed. Bradford was a suspect from the start, but due to a lack of evidence, the case remained cold for decades. A breakthrough was made in 2007 with the discovery of the wire.
According to reports, Douglas Bradford is now serving his sentence at the California Men's Colony in San Luis Obispo.
An upcoming episode of Oxygen's Dateline: Secrets Uncovered will revisit Lynne Knight's murder case this Tuesday. The episode, titled The Wire, airs on May 9, at 9:00 pm ET. Here's what the synopsis for the episode reads:
"Lynne Knight was a vibrant young nurse whose love of adventure made her stand out; her murder haunted detectives for decades."
Douglas Bradford convicted in ex-girlfriend's 1979 strangling and stabbing death over three decades later
The National Post reported that after a six-week trial, during which one of O.J. Simpson's former attorneys defended Douglas Bradford, the ex-boyfriend of the Canadian-origin nurse, Lynne Knight, who was killed in her California home over three decades ago in 1979, was found guilty of first-degree murder in the crime. He was later sentenced to 26 years to life in prison.
Originally from Stratford, Ontario, Knight, who worked as a nurse in Torrance, California, was found strangled and stabbed to death at her house in the early morning hours of August 30, 1979. Thirty-five years later, in August 2014, Bradford, a 62-year-old retired engineer, was convicted in the cold case.
At the time of Knight's murder, investigators were unable to build a case against Bradford or any other potential suspect, and the case eventually went cold. A cold-case squad in Torrance, Los Angeles, re-opened the case in 1997. They finally charged Bradford after finding the same wire used to make a homemade garrote, which was employed to unsuccessfully strangle the victim, in his mother's garage.
According to the Los Angeles Times, Bradford was an engineering student at Cal State Long Beach when the murder took place in 1979. He had dated Knight for a few months, but the nurse ended the relationship. Knight did not take the breakup very well and even stalked her for days before finally murdering her. He first tried to strangle her using a homemade garrote before stabbing her 15 times to complete the task.
Where is Douglas Bradford now?
Detectives had long suspected Douglas Bradford's involvement in the cold case murder, but justice was delayed for over 30 years until a jury found him guilty in August 2014. He maintained his innocence throughout the trial even after the verdict was announced, claiming that he is "an innocent man wrongfully convicted" and is "paying for someone else's crime."
In December of that year, Bradford, 62, was sentenced to 26 years to life in prison for the first-degree murder of Lynne Knight and is currently serving his sentence at the California Men's Colony in San Luis Obispo.
Dateline: Secrets Uncovered on Oxygen to airs Lynne Knight's cold case this Tuesday at 9 pm ET.
