In 2018, Lana Clayton, the seventh wife of retired millionaire Steve Clayton, confessed to lacing her husband's water with a fatal amount of Visine eye drops because she was controlling, manipulative, and abusive. But detectives believed she poisoned him to acquire all his wealth because their marriage was at a breaking point and she wanted to continue living the same lavish lifestyle.

According to Oxygen, Lana Clayton pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and tampering with food or a drug causing death in her husband's killing and was handed a 25-year prison sentence. The Cinemaholic further reported that she is currently serving her sentence at the women's-only Leath Correctional Institution in Greenwood County, South Carolina.

This Friday, an upcoming episode of ID's American Monster will delve into Steve Clayton's eyedrops poisoning murder. The episode, titled Everyone's Favorite Uncle, airs on the channel at 8:00 pm ET on May 19.

Here's what the synopsis for the episode says:

"Steve and Lana Clayton seem like a devoted couple, but all isn't as it seems; a sinister plan is acted out over the course of several days, leaving one of them dead."

Steve Clayton's cause of death was initially ruled to be a heart attack until a subsequent toxicology report detected the presence of tetrahydrozoline, a lethal substance found in eye drops, in his system in large amounts.

Lana Clayton of South Carolina, who was accused of killing her husband with eye drops in 2018, pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in January 2020 and was given a 25-year prison sentence.

The Cinemaholic reported that she is currently serving her sentence at the women's-only Leath Correctional Institution in Greenwood County, South Carolina.

She was initially charged with murder and other charges in connection with the poisoning of her millionaire husband, Steve Clayton, at their home in Lake Wylie in July of that year.

According to NBC, Steve, 64, died on July 21, 2018. His cause of death was initially ruled to be a heart attack, but a subsequent toxicology report detected poisonous levels of tetrahydrozoline, a lethal substance used to relieve redness in the eyes, in his system.

The following month, 52-year-old Lana was arrested. She then confessed to lacing his water the chemical without the victim's knowledge.

At her sentencing, Lana Clayton reportedly told the judge that she had no intentions of killing her husband. She just wanted to make him sick and suffer because of his controlling and abusive actions towards her. She said in court,

"After finding out the Visine was the cause of death, I attempted to take my life as well. I couldn’t live with the thought that I did such a terrible thing."

Meanwhile, Judge Paul M. Burch called her actions a "tangled web" for letting him suffer for three days until he died. The sheriff's office had reported that the poisoning started on July 19 until the victim died three days later on July 21.

Judge Murch said,

"What a tangled web we weave. Ms. Clayton, you sure have tangled this one up. You let him suffer for three days."

Lana Clayton’s defense lawyers called her a good person who has previously worked as a Veterans Affairs nurse. They also alleged that she was abused as a child, r*ped on a military base and battled with post-traumatic stress disorder.

NBC further reported that Lana had previously used a crossbow to accidentally shoot her husband in the back of the head in 2016. At the time, she claimed it was an accident. She altered her story years later, claiming to have had an argument with Steve, who threw something at her and that she only fired the crossbow while fleeing.

According to solicitor Kevin Brackett, Lana killed her husband to acquire his wealth. Brackett alleged that she also destroyed his will and dumped his phone into a lake so he couldn't contact anybody for help.

Steve Clayton's eye drop poisoning case is scheduled to air on ID's American Monster this Friday.
