Most of Yellowstone's filming took place in the states of Montana and Utah. Until season 3, more than half of the series' stages were shot in Utah. Starting in season 4, the shooting of the show turned entirely towards Montana.
Is Yellowstone filmed at a real ranch?
Yes. Yellowstone is filmed on an actual active cattle and a guest ranch called the Chief Joseph Ranch. The original ownership of 2500 acres was established in 1880 and has had various names and proprietors throughout its history. When the location manager of the show came across the ranch, he decided it was perfect for the show. The property was not officially listed as a shooting location. So the manager got in touch with the owners via a "cold call."
Can you have a tour of the Dutton Ranch?
Yes, you can visit the Dutton Ranch for the greater part of the year by renting one of the guest rooms. Every booking includes a tour of the property with access to various shooting venues in Yellowstone. The cabins are open for visitors from March through the first week of January, with the exception of production dates. The cabins are independent and have a fully equipped kitchen and an open-air barbeque. The main cottage is not available for rent.
Apart from luxury accommodations and spectacular landscapes, guests of the ranch can take advantage of great fishing spots. There are also pastures and corrals adapted to accommodate the guest horses and lots of beautiful horseback riding paths nearby.
Is Yellowstone based on any true history?
Though the Yellowstone ranch exists in the real world, the show is not based on a true story. The popular TV series is not based on a novel or a series of books, either. The story is completely fictional and was created by Taylor Sheridan and John Linson. Although fictional, the series targets real problems like poor resource management, oppression, inequity within government, and extreme poverty.
Sheridan's inspiration for Yellowstone’s stories was driven by the real change he saw in the highlands of the western United States. Yellowstone is a series built on ranching, land enhancement, and power, and humans will go as far as advancing in all three.
