Christopher Lloyd and Steven Levitan are the creators of the American family comedy television series Modern Family for the American Broadcasting Company. From September 23, 2009, until April 8, 2020, it has 11 seasons. Three different family structures are followed in suburban Los Angeles, and they are all connected by the patriarch, Jay Pritchett.

The idea for the series came to Christopher Lloyd and Steven Levitan while they discussed their own "modern families." An ensemble cast is used in Modern Family, which is presented in a mockumentary format and usually has introspective interview portions in which the actors talk directly to the camera.

On February 5, 2019, the show received a renewal for its eleventh and final season, which debuted on September 25, 2019. On April 8, 2020, the series' conclusion aired.

What is the plot of Modern Family?

The Los Angeles-based television series Modern Family centers on three distinct kinds of families (nuclear, hybrid, and same-sex), all of which are connected by Jay Pritchett's daughter Claire and son Mitchell. Fulgencio Joseph "Joe" Pritchett, a young boy, and Manuel "Manny" Delgado, a son from Gloria's first marriage, are the kids of patriarch Jay and Gloria Delgado Pritchett (née Ramirez), a considerably younger lady. Gloria's ex-husband, and DeDe, Jay's ex-wife, occasionally appear on the show.

Claire, Jay's daughter, was a stay-at-home mom who subsequently returned to her job as the CEO of her father's company, Pritchett's Closets and Blinds. She is married to Phil Dunphy, a real estate agent and self-described "cool dad" who also enjoys playing the violin and magic tricks. They have three kids: Luke, the eccentric only son; Alex, the bright but geeky middle child; and Haley, the prototypically snarky adolescent girl. Haley's on-again, off-again lover, Dylan, is a recurring character in the show.

Jay's lawyer-son is Mitchell. He and Cameron Tucker have an adopted daughter, Lily Tucker-Pritchett, who is of Vietnamese descent. In the series' finale, they add a newborn boy called Rexford to their family. The chapters are humorously based on events that many families experience in real life, as the name implies. This family represents a modern family.

How was the critical reception of the Modern Family?

Throughout its first few seasons, Modern Family received high praise from critics. Even though the show's critical reaction fluctuated throughout the course of its 11 seasons, its popularity remained constant. 7.37 million first-run viewers watched the final episode of the final season, which garnered generally favorable reviews. 6.72 million first-run viewers watched the retrospective documentary that aired prior to the last episode.

The show won four Emmys for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series, two each for Eric Stonestreet and Ty Burrell, and two for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, Julie Bowen, during its first five seasons. The show also won the Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series in each of its first five years. It received 75 nominations and 22 Emmy nods in all. Additionally, it took home the 2011 Golden Globe for Best Television Series - Musical or Comedy.

Why did the Cast of Modern Family file a lawsuit?

The pay range for the adult cast for the first season was somewhere between $30,000 and $90,000. The actors tried to restructure their contracts in the summer of 2012 to get increased per-episode compensation as a result of the show's popularity, but negotiations fell through to the point that the first table read for the fourth season had to be rescheduled. On July 24, 2012, Ty Burrell, Julie Bowen, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Eric Stonestreet, and Sofa Vergara, five of the cast members, hired the Quinn Emanuel legal team and filed a lawsuit against 20th Century Fox Television in Los Angeles County Superior Court. Ed O'Neill joined his fellow cast members in asking for hikes to roughly $200,000 per episode even though he was not a party to the litigation; O'Neill was already making more per episode than the other five.

Invoking the "seven-year rule" in California Labor Code Section 2855 (also known as the De Havilland Law), the complaint demanded that their contracts be declared null and invalid for breaking the limit. On July 28, 2012, the dispute was settled. With raises per season, the five adult cast members' pay went from $55,000–$65,000 per episode to $150,000–$175,000 per episode, plus a cut of residual earnings. Ed O'Neill’s compensation was reduced to match that of his co-stars because he was already making $200,000 per episode, but he received a bigger share of the back-end earnings. Later in the summer, deals were reached with four of the five young actors that raised their episode salaries from $15,000 to 25,000 to $70,000 with an extra $10,000 hike for the season.

FAQs about Modern Family

Q. What is the criticism of the show?

A. The show was attacked by Michelle Haimoff of the Christian Science Monitor for solely featuring stay-at-home mothers while the husbands had highly successful careers: "There is a distinction between eccentric, imperfect people and those who can never succeed professionally. Additionally, it makes for sexist television when the latter is consistently a woman. Additionally, it results in unrealistic television." Writer Ali Waller of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon tweeted, "If Modern Family is so modern,' why don't any of the ladies have jobs?" Other authors support this critique, asserting that modern society no longer views stay-at-home women as the norm.

Q. Is there a spinoff en route?

A. In June 2020, ABC Entertainment president Karey Burke addressed the idea for a spin-off from Modern Family co-creator and executive producer Steven Levitan that would center on Mitch and Cam. The show's star, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, declared in June 2022 that the screenplay for the spinoff was complete. He claimed the script was outstanding and was accessible. "Consequently, who knows? If someone wants to create it, perhaps."

Q. Is Modern Family available on Netflix?

A. Modern Family is regrettably no longer accessible on any Netflix library. On other streaming platforms including Hulu, Peacock, Amazon Prime Video, Disney Plus, Hotstar, and YouTube TV, you may still watch the show.
