1899 was shot entirely on a German sound stage at Studio Babelsberg, just outside Berlin. Portions of the series were also shot in London, United Kingdom, while the plot revolves around a boat of migrants traveling from London to New York, United States.
Originally, the showrunners had planned to shoot the show in different countries, notably Poland, Scotland, and Spain. However, the Covid pandemic deterred their plans. But, as we saw in the series, the creators were able to create a visual performance while shooting in just limited places. After a few trial shoots in November 2020, the crew officially began filming on May 3, 2021, and continued until November 5, 2021.
How did they film 1899?
After signing a five-year exclusive agreement with Netflix in 2018, Friese and bo Odar began constructing the state-of-the-art virtual production phase called Dark Bay in Babelsberg, Germany. Instead of filming on-location, the 1899 crew mainly used the Babelsberg Soundstage Studio in Potsdam, Germany, for most of the filming, benefited from the groundbreaking virtual production phase, Volume, with 4,500 sq ft of fire space, according to Deadline.
The space is completely enclosed by an LED screen actuated by a video game engine that moves with and responds to the motion of the camera, for rendering a realistic backdrop and the sky which creates the illusion of taking photos outside. Along with the amazingly cool techniques of the installations, the Volume is housed in a historical sound stage built in 1910. According to Whitlam, the crew was able to record over half of the production in camera without much need for post-production.
“The Mandalorian”, a Disney Plus production, is the only other high-cost production to use this technology to film. The 1899 team used its functionalities to film all the scenes at sea, including the different portions of the boat.
