Mamma Mia, an outstanding musical rom-com, was filmed on the Greek islands of Skopelos & Skiathos and Damouchari in the Pelion Region.
The protagonist of Mamma Mia is Donna Carmichael (Meryl Streep), a liberated single mother who is getting ready for her daughter's wedding at a hotel she owns on a Greek island. When Sophie (Amanda Seyfried), Donna's 20-year-old daughter, decides to invite three of her mother's former lovers in the hopes of learning who her biological father is, things get complicated for Donna.
Mamma Mia! was based on Catherine Johnson's book from 1999 of the same name. The movie was directed by Phyllida Lloyd and written by Catherine Johnson. The movie features additional music composed by ABBA member Benny Andersson and is based on the songs of the pop group ABBA. Playtone and Littlestar Productions worked together to co-produce the movie, which was a collaboration between Germany, the UK, and the United States.
Critics gave it mixed reviews, praising the musical numbers and production values while criticizing the choice of inexperienced singers and the overly sentimental tone. On a $52 million budget, the movie made $611 million worldwide, ranking fifth in box office revenue for 2008. On July 20, 2018, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again was released, featuring a large portion of the original cast.
The locations where the movie was shot are as follows -
Skiathos, Greek Island
Skiathos is a stunning Greek island that is a part of the Sporades archipelago and is located in the northwest Aegean Sea. The island is primarily known for its crowded beaches and vibrant nightlife. Most visitors to the island either stay close to the beaches or check out the pubs and restaurants that serve delectable and genuine Greek cuisine.
But since movies like Mamma Mia were filmed in Skiathos, a lot of tourists go there specifically for that reason. In addition, other movies, including 1980's Summer Lovers, were filmed here in addition to this one. After Mamma Mia was filmed, Skiathos gained notoriety as an exotic island as Hollywood turned its attention to it and made it famous.
A must-see location on the island is the Old Port, where the "three fathers" in the movie first meet. St. Nikolas Bell Towers is another destination that you simply must see while you're on the island. You can also book a room at some of the prestigious hotels where the movie's cast stayed. Some of the best hotels on the island include Mandraki, the Skiathos Princess Hotel, and the Skiathos Palace Hotel.
Skopelos, Greek Island
Another well-liked Greek island is Skopelos, which receives thousands of visitors every year. This was one of the locations used to shoot Mamma Mia in the western Aegean Sea.
Mamma Mia featured a lot of outdoor scenes that were primarily filmed in Skopelos. Several of the movie's scenes were filmed in a few towns and on a number of incredible beaches. The inability to fly directly to the island is the only minor drawback. Prior to boarding a ferry boat from Skiathos, you must first fly there. That is also how you get to the island.
Some of the key scenes, including Sophie's departure after her wedding and Sophie's potential father's cliff-jumping scene, were shot in Skopelos, which was referred to as Kalokairi in the film. The Adrena Hotel, Prince Stafilos Hotel, and Skopelos Village Hotel are a few of the well-known lodging options. If you visit the island, you must spend at least one night there. The best thing about this particular island is how inexpensive it is. You can eat at excellent restaurants and stay in nice hotels for a reasonable cost.
Damouchari, Pelion Region
The Mamma Mia cast and crew stayed in Damouchari as their primary base of operations while the movie was being filmed. The majority of the footage recorded here was later combined with pictures taken on Skiathos and Skopelos.
Near the country's eastern coast is where you'll find Damouchari. The travel time is only about 30 minutes from cities like Athens or Volos. These locations served as the backdrop for a few of the movie's opening scenes. Here, scenes such as when Julie Waters and Christine Baranski first arrive on the island and are welcomed by Meryl Streep were filmed. The Blue Beach in Damouchari is where several beach scenes were filmed.
How was the soundtrack of the movie?
A soundtrack album was made available on July 7, 2008, through Polydor Records in other countries and Decca Records in the US. The recording was produced by Benny Andersson. Along with sixteen songs from the film, the album also contains a secret track. At the 51st Annual Grammy Awards, the album was nominated for "Best Compilation Soundtrack Album for Motion Picture, Television, or Other Visual Media."
