His sons have not only pursued careers in the entertainment industry in his footsteps, but some of them have even collaborated with him on various endeavors.
The list of his sons and their respective careers is as follows:
Domhnall Gleeson
Brendan and Mary's oldest child, Domhnall Gleeson, was born on May 12, 1983. Along with his brothers, he was raised in Malahide, County Dublin, where he participated in early school plays. Domhnall began his professional acting career after receiving his Bachelor of Arts in Media Arts from the Dublin Institute of Technology.
In 2004, he made his acting debut alongside his father in Martin McDonagh's short film “Six Shooter.” However, Bill Weasley, Ron Weasley's older brother, was the role that launched his acting career, and he appeared in both “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 and Part 2” the following year. His father, who is best known for playing Alastor Moody in the franchise, also starred in the project.
Since then, Domhnall has continued to have a successful career. Among many others, some of his most notable movies include "About Time," "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," and "Peter Rabbit." Brendan and Domhnall have hilariously accepted awards on each other's behalf on a variety of occasions. When his son won the Rising Star award at the 8th Annual Irish Film & Television Awards in 2011, Brendan joked, "I'm not so sure about rising star.” “I could never get him up in the morning."
Following his victory over his son in the category of "best supporting actor" at the 2015 BIFA Awards, Domhnall returned the favor by accepting his father's prize. "My dad told me that I should accept it if he beat me at this," he said before reading his father's prepared speech on stage.
Fergus Gleeson
Fergus Gleeson, the second child of Brendan and Mary, was born in 1983. He has largely avoided the spotlight, unlike his brothers, and has only occasionally made an appearance with his father. He has nevertheless continued his father's legacy in the entertainment industry.
In addition to being credited as a composer for the short film “Psychic,” which starred his father Brendan as well as his brothers Domhnall and Brian, he had a previous acting role in the 2012 TV movie “Immaturity for Charity.”
On the Irish talk show The Late Late Show in 2020, Fergus made a rare appearance with his father to perform "A Pint of Plain Is Your Only Man," with Fergus playing guitar and strumming along.
Brian Gleeson
Brendan and Mary's third child, Brian Gleeson, was born on November 14, 1987. He participated in a number of regional school plays, just like his older brother Domhnall, before deciding to pursue acting professionally.
In the 2006 John Boorman film “The Tiger's Tail,” in which he co-starred with his father, he made his acting debut. He was nominated for an Irish Film and Television Award in 2010 for best actor in a supporting role after receiving positive reviews for his performance as Hughie in the first season of “Love/Hate.”
He has also performed on stage with his father in addition to appearing in movies like “Snow White and the Huntsman” and “Phantom Thread.” Brendan appeared alongside his sons Brian and Domhnall in Enda Walsh's play “The Walworth Farce” in 2015.
The psychological horror movie “Mother!,” directed by Darren Aronofsky and starring Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem, also featured Brian and Domhnall as co-stars. In order to represent Cain and Abel from the Bible, the two actors played brothers. Additionally, they collaborated in 2021 on the “Frank of Ireland” Amazon Prime series.
Rory Gleeson
Brendan and Mary's youngest child, Rory Gleeson, was born in 1989. His official website states that he was raised in Dublin and received a BA in Psychology from Trinity College Dublin before pursuing further education at Oxford, the University of Manchester, and the University of East Anglia.
Rory has established himself as a writer, while his brothers chose to pursue careers in acting. He released his first book, “Rockadoon Shore,” in 2017. At the Galway Film Fleadh the following year, his short film “Psychic” made its debut.
In addition to his brothers Brian and Domhnall, his father Brendan also acted in the film. Brendan was also the director, and his brother Fergus was the composer. His first play, “Blood in the Dirt,” made its debut at The New Theatre in November 2019.
