The end to the Norse video game series God of War is officially here, and while many spoilers leaked ahead of the game's formal release, there are still numerous twists concealed in the PlayStation-exclusive title. Thankfully, Kratos does not die in Ragnarok (against popular belief), but there are a slew of people who perish before the game's end, either at the hands of playable characters or through other methods. So, who dies in God of War: Ragnarok?
Who are the major deaths in God of War Ragnarok?
Fenrir
Fenrir, Atreus' pet wolf, dies at the beginning of the game due to an unexplained sickness, but Atreus accidentally transfers his soul into his knife when comforting Fenrir. He later transfers this soul into Garm's body to deter him from raging all across the Nine Realms.
Nidhogg
Nidhogg is a mythical gigantic dragon who dwelt between the branches of the world tree Yggdrasil, safeguarding its roots as part of the universe's cycle. Her job is to chew on Yggdrasil's roots and limit overgrowth at the World Tree's base. When Freya tries to free herself from Odin's grasp by untying the roots that bind her to Midgard, Nidhogg emerges to thwart them but is eventually defeated and killed by a combination of Freya and Kratos.
Heimdall
Heimdall is the Norse God of Foresight, Surveillance, Order and Foreknowledge. He is Odin's son, the half-brother of Thor, Meili, Bragi, Tr, Hodr, Baldur, Hermodr, Vali, and Vidar, as well as the uncle of Magni, Modi, Forseti, and Thrud. He fights Kratos, who manages to pulverize Heimdall in the fight and then impales him in the arm.
But Kratos then spares him after Heimdall begs him to stop, although he changes his mind and threatens Atreus. This results in a second battle, after Kratos blows up the Aesir God's arm, in which Kratos kills him.
Brok
Brok is one of the two Huldra Brothers, blacksmiths who fashioned the Leviathan Axe and Mjölnir. He had already died but was resurrected by his brother Sindri, despite becoming a soulless being. Odin kills him after revealing that he was impersonating Tyr the entire time and stabs Brok after the dwarf questioned Tyr's motives.
Surtr and Ragnarok
Sutr, Sinmara's husband, was a fire giant who was long predicted to be the one that destroyed Asgard during Ragnarök. After absorbing fire from Kratos' Blades of Chaos and being impaled at Sinmara's icy heart in his chest, he transforms into Ragnarok. Sutr's final form, Ragnarok, is slain after he plunges his sword into Asgard, destroying the realm as well.
Thor
Thor is Odin's son and right-hand man, as well as Sif's husband and the father of Magni, Modi, and Thrud. Thor executes Odin's intentions, but after a lengthy battle with Kratos, where the former Greek God of War refuses to kill him, he seeks to change from his violent and boozy past in order to raise Thrud well. Odin is not pleased, especially after Thor refuses to kill Kratos, and executes him by impaling his spear into his son's chest.
Odin
Odin is the eldest son of Borr and the King of the Aesir while also being a father to Thor, Heimdall, Baldur and a few other Aesir gods. He is vanquished after a lengthy battle with Kratos, Atreus, and Freya. However, Atreus tries to persuade Odin that there is another way, but the All-Father refuses to listen, forcing Atreus to transfer his soul into a spiritual stone. He then gives it to Freya, who has lost her desire for vengeance, but Sindiri appears, steals the stone, and smashes it, killing Odin.
Freyr
Freyr is a Vanir God who is the god of rain and fertility. He is Njordr's son, Freya's brother, and thus Baldur's uncle. He is perceived to be the Vanir's leader, assisting them in liberating the realm from Odin's Einherjar army. He is subsequently killed during Ragnarok's annihilation of Asgard after waiting behind to block Ragnarok's sword for as long as possible to secure his comrades' escape.
Gná
Gná was the Norse goddess of Wind and Fullness and Freya’s former friend and messenger. After Sigrún regained her freedom, she finally succeeded as Queen of the Valkyries. Gná, the highest-ranking survivor of Asgard's destruction, seized command of the remaining Einherjar to continue the war in Asgard's honor. Kratos and Freya finally combat her and after a long, violent battle, the duo manage to defeat her.
Despite Freya's pleas, Gná would not renounce her vengeance, and the Valkyrie ordered that Freya finish what she started. She accepted, and Gná let her former friend behead her.
