Sydney Watson, an American Airlines passenger, asked the company for compensation after tweeting that she was “wedged” between two obese passengers during a three-hour long flight.

Several netizens took to the social media platform to debate whether the doctor was in the wrong or whether obese people should be called out for being overweight. Meanwhile, the airlines released their own statement regarding the matter.

On Monday, October 11, 2022, Sydney Watson took to Twitter, saying that it was “absolutely NOT acceptable or okay,” to be “stuck” between people’s “arm rolls” for three hours. While tagging American Airlines, she said in another tweet:

“I just experienced getting sweat on, touched without my consent, smacked in the face and subjected to hours of no personal space.”

Watson also revealed that the flight attendant on the plane asked her several times if she needed anything and gave her “the ‘this is f**ked’ pity expression.’”

The Australian/American political commentator also revealed that she asked the brother of one of the obese women if he would like to “swap seats.” However, he declined the offer.

Sydney Watson went on to stress about obese people having to buy two seats if they wish to fly.

After the matter gained massive traction on social media, the airline company took to Twitter to state that they do not discriminate against body types. They also claimed to offer a variety of seats in different sizes and styles. They went on to provide a link that explained the types of seats offered, including options offering basic economy, business, and first-class seats. The tweet read:

“Our passengers come in all different sizes and shapes. We're sorry you were uncomfortable on your flight.”

Responding to the same, Watson questioned them:

“So, I’m expected to have only a quarter of a seat when I fly?”

In the upcoming tweets, Sydney Watson defended her complaint against the airline company and showed followers the heaps of backlash she was receiving regarding the matter.

Amidst the online debate of obese passengers on plane, internet users were left divided over the matter. Some netizens slammed her for tweeting hurtful comments about overweight people. Many endlessly called her a “fat-shamer.”

One netizen also compared her to conservative commentator Candace Owens. As she garnered immense backlash for “fat-shaming,” she also amassed immense support.

Several other netizens took to Twitter, explaining that they went through similar uncomfortable journeys on the flight. Many showed support for the internet personality and agreed on overweight people having to buy two flight tickets for themselves.

As the debate over Watson's experience with the airline continued on Twitter, it is safe to say that her critics outnumbered those in support of her.
