The new Marvel action-adventure series Secret Invasion is all set to premiere on June 21, 2023. The series will follow the immensely popular character and the former director of S.H.I.E.L.D., Nick Fury, as he uncovers a conspiracy for a group of shapeshifting Skrulls to infiltrate Earth in positions of power around the world, recruiting Everett K. Ross, Maria Hill, and Talos to stop it and save humanity.
The show will be host to a star-studded cast that includes Samuel L. Jackson (who plays the lead role of Nick Fury), Ben Mendelsohn (who plays the role of Talos), and Cobie Smulders (who plays the role of Maria Hill) in leading roles. However, the show has been in the headlines for months now as it will also be host to Don Cheadles' curious character James Rhodes.
The character was last seen briefly in the critically acclaimed 2021 film The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and has since managed to capture the attention of many fans. Throughout the last two years, fans have been very vocal about wanting to see this character come to life and be given an even larger role in any of the upcoming MCU films or series, and Secret Invasion has finally done that.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Don Cheadle finally opened up on his character and stated that his character James Rhodes will be the "right hand to the president" of the United States of America. He also confirmed that his character will be on the "on the other side" of Samuel L. Jackson's character Nick Fury. Cheadle commented:
"In this one, he finds himself not directly at odds but somewhat on the other side of where Fury is."
In an other interview with Empire magazine, Cheadle elaborated on his dynamic with Nick Fury's character and said:
"Rhodey's got a new role in this one, Our very first scene is Rhodey and Nick Fury locking horns. Rhodey isn't an adversary, but he's being more adversarial than he have been before. That's always been Rhodey's cross to bear. Is he going to stay within the confines of being a military man following the chain of command, or is he going outside the box?"
Don Cheadle comments on how Secret Invasion will differ from the other MCU projects
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Don Cheadle stated that Secret Invasion will feature "espionage and double-crosses" as opposed to "the bells and whistles of big special effects". He said:
"It speaks to the elasticity of what the MCU can be. This one feels much closer to a movie like 'Bourne Identity' or something that's more along the tone of a '70s movie. It's not as much about the bells and whistles of big special effects. It's more about the intrigue and drama, the espionage and double-crosses. And I still think it fits perfectly with what the MCU is able to do and pull off."
When asked about how his seemingly normal character will be a part of this action-adventure project, Cheadle responded that his role might seem normal on the surface, however, fans can expect a totally different side of his character to be revealed in the Disney+ series:
"This is a different kind of Rhodey—a political animal and not, you know, a guy who has a special suit. He's the president's right-hand man in this. So he's the guy that makes a lot of decisions—some good, some bad."
