In an episode called Violet, 24 years prior to the heist it turns out that Ray was associated with Roger Salas of Rufus Sewell, previously known as Graham Davies. On what was supposedly their last robbery together, Ray and Graham decided to steal Ray's country club where his wife, Lily, was working at.

However, in the course of the operation, Graham set the building on fire to cover their tracks but the pair failed to notice that Lily had been called to work and was caught in the fire and died as a result. Ray was arrested and put in jail for participating in the robbery while Graham manages to liberate himself. Later, he changed his name to Roger Salas and started a security company, SLS.

He retaliated and his health declined following the development of Parkinson's disease. Ray made it out of jail, and with the help of his fence, Ava changed his name to Leo Pap and started scheduling the complex heist to take revenge on Salas.
