Chicago-based game design firm, Cards Against Humanity, owned by Max Temkin, Josh Dillon, Ben Hantoot, David Munk, Daniel Dranove, Eli Halpern, Eliot Weinstein, and David Pinsof, has recently come under fire. The firm made headlines after one of its co-founders Max Temkin stepped down from the company in 2020, owing to allegations of racism and s*xism.
As per USA Today on September 20, 2024, Cards Against Humanity has sued Elon Musk for $15 million. The lawsuit against the SpaceX CEO was filed on September 19, 2024, in the Texas state court, accusing SpaceX employees of damaging and trespassing the firm's land near the U.S.-Mexico border.
The game design firm purchased the land in 2017, using more than $2 million in donations to protect the area from Donald Trump building a wall along the southern border.
Moreover, Cards Against Humanity also took to Instagram on September 21, 2024, to inform followers about the situation wherein they called Trump a "racist billionaire" and stated:
"Unfortunately, an even richer, more racist billionaire—Elon Musk—snuck up on us from behind and completely f**ked that land with gravel, tractors, and space garbage."
Additionally, the Instagram post also mentioned what the design firm would do if they won the lawsuit, stating:
"If we win, we’ll split the net proceeds with all 150,000 original CAH Saves America subscribers—up to $100 each. Sign up and read more about Musk’s f**kery at www.ElonOwesYou100Dollars.com."
Cards Against Humanity's co-founder Max Temkin's exit from the firm
According to details from the Chicago Sun-Times dated June 2020, Cards Against Humanity's co-founder Max Temkin stepped down from the company after former employees of the firm alleged he was fostering a s*xist and racist workplace.
There were multiple social media posts from former employees alleging Temkin was curating an office culture that was not convenient to female or Black staff members.
In a now-unavailable statement published by the other co-founders of the firm, an internal investigation into the matter was launched and within three days of the same, Max left the company on June 9, 2020.
Apart from social media posts, Polygon ran an exposé on the firm, specifically on Max Temkin, published on June 23, 2020. Three former employees informed Polygon that the firm constantly shut down ideas from Black writers regarding Black culture.
In their statement to the public, the co-founders of the game design firm mentioned that they accept to have made a lot of mistakes, given the firm grew from a hobby project in their parent's basements to a company with 18 full-time employees.
Issuing an apology to their employees, Card Against Humanity's co-founders mentioned:
“We want to apologize to employees who were unheard or disrespected in our office. We are truly sorry. We also want to state unequivocally that we condemn harassment of anyone who has posted stories about their experiences at Cards Against Humanity.”
In other news, neither SpaceX nor the CEO of SpaceX, Elon Musk have commented to any of the publications regarding their alleged activities on Cards Against Humanity's land.
However, according to NBC, Elon Musk has been moving multiple businesses to Texas including X, Tesla, and SpaceX.
The design firm's lawsuit also mentions that SpaceX's abuse of their property has destroyed the land's natural condition and also caused "greater harm" to the firm by "virtue of damage" to its paying supporters.
