Wilmot Reed Hastings, Jr. was born in Boston on October 8, 1960, in Massachusetts, U.S. Hastings was a mathematics student at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, and graduated in 1983. He sold door-to-door vacuum cleaners in a sabbatical year before he got into university.

Having served in the United States Marine Corps, he spent two years with the Peace Corps, most of the time teaching mathematics in Swaziland. He obtained a master's degree in computer science in 1988 from Stanford University. After that, Hastings became a software developer.

In 1991, he established Pure Software, which he sold in 1997 for a substantial profit. Hastings came up with the idea for Netflix after paying $40 extra for a video he lost. He got the idea to pay a monthly membership to rent as many films as you wanted. He partnered with Marc Randolph soon after that, and the couple founded Netflix in Scotts Valley, California.

What is the history of Netflix?

Netflix started out as a mail-order DVD hire business. Back then, there were multiple videos and DVD rental shops in each city. In the United States, most of those points of sale belonged to Blockbuster, but there were also a lot of independent companies. For a lot of people, going to these shops and selecting a movie and snacks to accompany them was a special event. It was an activity that was very popular with families and couples.

Compared with the liveliness and excitement of these stores, DVD rental on Netflix fades. Co-founder Marc Randolph held the position of CEO of Netflix until 2002. We only know a little about the reason why he left except to say that the company went beyond its capabilities. In consequence, Reed Hastings became Netflix's CEO.

In 2007, Netflix started its streaming service. It took some time for the idea to spread, especially since the Internet needed to be completely up to the task of spreading to certain parts of the world. However, the possibility of skipping the lease and late fees ended up making the streaming service a success.

During the last decade, the Netflix streaming service has become extremely popular and generates approximately $2 billion annually. The success of Netflix can be partly explained by the streaming service providing entertainment without advertising. The possibility of choosing when and what you look at fits into many people's lifestyles.

Netflix currently has close to 200 million subscribers worldwide. The company assisted Reed Hastings in raising $5.2 billion in reported net worth.

How does Netflix transform entertainment?

Besides changing how people view entertainment, Netflix also changes how entertainment is made. Whereas programs and films have traditionally been shot in California, the cost of living and working is very high. Netflix has dramatically reduced its costs by shifting its production to New Mexico.

Stranger Things was among the first Netflix originals to be filmed in the new location in Albuquerque. Not only did the move save Netflix a lot of money, but it also contributed to the prosperity of the state of Albuquerque. It immediately brought great employment and income to the region while stimulating tourism.
