Rachel Green had two sisters, Jill and Amy, who were portrayed by Reese Witherspoon and Christina Applegate respectively, in the American sitcom Friends.

Quite similar to Rachel’s initial character, Jill and Amy were also as spoiled as Rachel was. Their portrayals made it clear that they had no idea how the real world works or how people struggle. Both of them were very mean, ditzy, audacious, and egoistic “daddy’s princesses," but Jill, in comparison to Amy, was kinder to Rachel’s friends.

However, the characters of Jill and Amy were not part of the original plan. In season six, Jill made her debut and had a brief storyline. The story required a member of Rachel's family conflict drama, so Amy was cast in season nine. However, according to rumors, Aniston had some issues with Witherspoon, making her return to the set difficult.

Is Reese Witherspoon disliked by Jennifer Aniston?

In the episode "The One With Rachel's Sister" from Friends season 6, Jill Green, Rachel's youngest sister, made her television debut. Jill was introduced as Rachel's only sister before she ever made an appearance on the sitcom. The show debuted Amy Green (Applegate), Rachel's second sister, in Friends season 9 rather than having Witherspoon return to play the same part. There was a rumor that, as the show progressed, the writers created Amy's character as a result of the conflict between Aniston and Witherspoon. They wanted a member of Rachel's family to add conflict, but Witherspoon's return appeared to have been derailed by problems on the set.

Witherspoon's commitment to a six-episode arc in Friends season 6 had already added fuel to the fire in terms of their tumultuous relationship with Aniston. It was later revealed that the episodes following her first appearances were the alternate reality two-parter. The showrunners shortened Jill's storyline because it wasn't necessary for her to be there. Both Aniston and her on-screen sister have denied any animosity between them. There was talk about Witherspoon coming back for season 9, but due to a scheduling conflict, Applegate joined the cast. Long-running sitcoms like Friends frequently have plot holes like Rachel's family circumstances. It's also crucial to remember that the producers of the show wanted Jill to return in season 10, but Witherspoon was pregnant and unable to appear, so they once again chose Applegate.

After years of denial, Aniston and Witherspoon have dispelled rumors about their alleged animosity for one another. The drama "The Morning Show," which aired on Apple TV+, reconnected the two actresses, who are close friends. In fact, the actresses re-enacted a scene from an earlier episode of Friends to promote their upcoming film. Witherspoon later posted the sentimental moment to her Instagram feed.

What was the storyline of Amy and Jill Green?

Rachel's youngest sister, Jill Green, visits the apartment in search of Rachel after Dr. Leonard refers to her as the only daughter he is proud of and their father threatens to cut them off after she buys a boat for a friend. She makes an effort to start a new life, just like Rachel did, but Jill breaks the rules by dating Ross out of spite for Rachel and overspending on shopping because she remembered her father's credit card numbers.

However, Ross rejected Jill before anything could ever begin because he realized that if something happened between them two, it would kill the possibility of anything happening between him and Rachel. As Jill was doing all of this because she was angry with Rachel, she left the place. She bitingly asked Ross if he was gay (based on his rejection of her even after she threw herself at him) and then walked away because she didn't want to be around someone who sabotaged her every move.

Older than Jill but younger than Rachel, Amy visits Rachel twice, both times because of problems with her boyfriend. She initially mistook Emma for a boy named Emmett. The next time she shows up, she continues to refer to Emma as "Ella." When she first views the infant, she declares, "You know what would be great? If you guys died!" believing the baby would be hers and that a movie about her struggles would be produced (similar to Baby Boom with Diane Keaton). However, when she finds out that Chandler and Monica would actually be given custody of the infant Emma, she is deeply offended. When Amy remarked that Emma wasn't cute, she and Rachel then got into a fight. In a fatherly manner, Chandler sorted them out.

She is persuaded by Rachel to break up with Myron, her fiancé, and try to start a new life on her own; however, this attempt fails when she gets Emma's ears pierced while babysitting. Rachel and Ross react angrily as Amy protests that Rachel is moving her out and that she has chosen to work as a "baby stylist," who offers guidance on child attire. Before Amy departs, Rachel and Amy patch things up by teasing their fatter sister Jill.
