Who plays Flounder in Disney's The Little Mermaid remake?

The Little Mermaid is all set for arrival in theatres on May 26, 2023. The live-action adaptation will reprise the iconic characters from the 1989 film of the same name and the star-studded cast for the film has already managed to build a huge fanbase for the movie.

The film will feature Ariel's sea creature friends as they accompany her on her quest to find true love but fans have their sight set on one particularly notable character from the film and that is Flounder, the flatfish. Flounder's popularity not only comes from the fact that he's Ariel's best friend but also from his interesting casting in the film.

The much-loved yellow and blue flatfish was previously voiced by child actor Jason Marin, who manage to perfectly encapsulate the anxious, shy, and friendly personality of the character and was the perfect partner to Ariel in whatever reckless endeavors she took up. However, The Little Mermaid has found the perfect voice for the character in the famed actor Jacob Tremblay.

Jacob Tremblay is a sixteen-year-old Canadian actor who has had a very successful career in films, having been a recipient of a Canadian Screen Award, a Critics' Choice Movie Award, and a nominee for a SAG Award and three Saturn Awards at such a young age.

He has starred in numerous famed projects in Hollywood, including Wonder (2017), Good Boys (2019), Doctor Sleep (2019), and Harley Quinn (2019), and is no stranger to partaking in an animated film, having previously voiced over in the animated films The Smurfs 2 and Pixar film Luca.

The actor's casting in the film has certainly caused waves in the industry and fans can't wait to see the young star bring to life one of the most beloved characters in all of Disney. The actor has previously teased about a change in Flounder's character design and it'll be interesting to see how he adds his own characteristics to the character's on-screen portrayal in The Little Mermaid.


The Little Mermaid's plot, cast, and other details

Disney released the official trailer of the film on March 13, 2023, and it has managed to garner worldwide appreciation for its incredible casting and stunning visuals. Disney also released the official synopsis of the film along with the trailer:

“The Little Mermaid” is the beloved story of Ariel, a beautiful and spirited young mermaid with a thirst for adventure. The youngest of King Triton’s daughters and the most defiant, Ariel longs to find out more about the world beyond the sea and, while visiting the surface, falls for the dashing Prince Eric."

It continues:

"While mermaids are forbidden to interact with humans, Ariel must follow her heart. She makes a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, which gives her a chance to experience life on land but ultimately places her life – and her father’s crown – in jeopardy."

The film is a live-action remake of the 1989 film of the same name and is host to a star-studded ensemble including Halle Lynn Bailey, who is slated to play the lead role of Ariel. She will also make history in her portrayal of the character as she'll become the second Black actor to be crowned a Disney princess previously done by Anika Noni Rose as the voice of Tiana in The Princess and the Frog.

The film will also be host to numerous supporting characters including names like, Jonah Hauer-Kin, Awkwafina, Jacob Tremblay, Noma Dumezweni, Javier Bardem, and Melissa McCarthy.


The Little Mermaid releases in theatres on May 26, 2023.
